Thread title says it all really!
My wife's picasso (X reg diesel) has developed a bizarre fault, in that the windscreen wipers are on the whole time. They can only be disabled by removing the fuse.
My local garage has admitted defeat in trying to identify the problem. They suspect that the answer may involve the replacement of an expensive black box of some type.
Before placing myself in the hands of the main dealer, and exposing my wallet to some eye watering treatment, does anyone have any idea as to what the problem might be?

Does it have rain sensing wipers? If so then it could be the sensor, above the mirror perhaps.

There was a fault reported with a pug recently where the wipers had developed a mind of their own. That one needed a new BSI unit. Unfortunatley on a multiplexed car you will only find out which bit (switch / BSI / wiper motor / sensor if fitted) is at fault by plugging it into the dealer's expensive diagnostic computer....

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Not on a X-reg, the only models with rain sensors are the Exclusive which didn't get introduced until 2002 or so.

Intermittently wipers would only switch off with ignition on Honda
Garage replaced switchgear on steering column, then motor, then wiring loom - fixed eventually by replacing small electronic module from somewhere. 4 visits, 4 courtesy cars.......
It cost nothing as car was still on warranty but a nightmare if out of warranty.

As a (12 month old) Picasso owner I have visions that once it is outside warranty I will be incrementally rewiring the whole thing to bypass the Bus system. It will be a joy to behold, with individual switches, loops of cable and conventional fuse boxes screwed to the dash board on an as required basis. The interesting thing will be replacing the dashboard display with a mechanical speedo and replacing the whole fuel sytem with a mechanical injection system......... It may then rival the economy and performance of my old turbo BX.
Meanwhile fingers heavily crossed and grabbing at the nearest tree i continue to be impressed by the whole package deal when considering the 10k price tag!
I suspect this post will find a degree of sympathy from Richard W but probaly not SWMBO. :-)

has garage confirmed its not a faulty relay?
didnt know on an x it was can-bus

They said something about it being a black box of some kind (they spoke to the missus and I got this second hand..)
I assume from that that they have ruled out the simple answers (like a faulty relay)
I too have been thinking of installing some kind of manual override. apparently with parts and labour, a new "black box" will be about £500.
And she wouldn't listen when I told her to buy a Mondeo...

I had a similar problem on the rear of a ZX. It was a faulty relay.

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for a few minutes? It might just reset the ECU. On the other hand it could be a fault in the stalk. This is a common problem with C5s - not sure about Picasso, but would suspect the setup is similar. Might even turn out to be something simple like a wire that has rubbed through or a dodgy connection at the back of the switch. Changing black boxes is a favourite pastime of dealers - usually because they can't troubleshoot properly.
If you do try disconnecting the battery don't panic if the engine fails to start again. Operate the door lock remote a few times to reset the immobiliser and all should be well.
I always think garages should be like compensation lawyers - 'no win no fee' - or rather 'no fix no pay' :-)

When I first met my wife to be she purchased a Citroen Xsara without driving it first. About the only thing that didn't go wrong with it were the wipers. After we got married and faced with ongoing and mounting bills for that lemon she traded it in for a Focus, end of problems.
