Does VW service include pollen filters - Halmer
Just wondered because with nothing to do today I thought I'd take a look at the one in my Passat which I have owned for five years from new.

The filter was completely caked..

First thought was one of being ripped off having had my car serviced by my local VW dealer every year.

Having looked at the service book, however, there does not seem to be any 'box' to tick to indicate that it has been changed so is the changing of this discretionary?

Cost me £10 for a new one from Halfords.

While you're changing it, make sure you put the lid back on very carefully. Also, it might be worth replacing the whole plastic filter assembly (or at least the gasket) while you're at it to avoid the dreaded water leak. Do a forum search on "Passat leak" if you need more details about the problems it can cause.......

My dad has a VW van, T reg (I believe based on the polo). he has been telling me that he gets a wet footwell whenever it rains. I told him I thought it was something to do with the pollen filter, but would check on this forum. Is it because it is blocked therain somehow gets diverted?? Is it just a case of changing it carefully?

Thanks

VW service does include the pollen filter at every 40,000 miles or so. Read the handbook to see what the service covers. The receipt will list what has been replaced/charged for.

What lid?!!!!!!
Does VW service include pollen filters - PeterRed
The lid of the pollen filter housing................. i.e. the plastic bit on top.

You mean the four foot wide plastic cover/lid?

There's a 10" x 7" approx housing that takes a 1" deep filter.

No lid.

The filter is held in place by a clip.

As shown in step 2 here. The filter is on the right and the little black clip can be seen.

Well, on mine the filter has its own cover. It's a pig to fit because you have to squeeze your fingers under the cowling that runs the width of the engine bay. See my comments in the separate thread. I reckon that water was leaking under the pollen filter housing itself in my case and that the bulkhead drains had nothing to do with it..

Annual servicing on a 02 Corsa & 06 Zafira by a Vauxhall main dealer & they've never touched the pollen filters without being asked to change them. They even tick the box to say they havn't been changed.

Isn't the recommended change on these every 2nd year?

Talking of which, the dealer the family use have never changed the filter on my Dad's Mk4 Astra (51 reg), but changed mine on my Vectra on it's 2nd service. Speaking off the record to one of the mechanics I know, he gave me the reason why the Astra more than likely has never been changed. Unlike the Vectra which is a 2 minute job, the Astra is something like 20 mins (glovebox has to come out to change it), and the garage can't justify charging the customer that amount of time for a filter change.

Both my Renaults get a pollen filter every service ( 12k and 18k ). The "used" ones look black by then and air-flow is starting go decline and they can start to give off " 'orrible odours". I would change them at the start of each summer.
