Over the weekend I discovered that Comma produce oil which meets VW 505.01 spec, the local moto factor sells it at £21.39 PLUS Vat for 4.5 litres.
I am wondering
a) has anyone has any views on This Comma oil
b) is this the cheapest PD oil available in the UK ?

Comma Oil is good stuff, they make Halfords own brand which accordingly is also fine.
|
I should say AFAIK they make Halfords own brand, they certainly make the std semi synth and synth.
|
My local auto factors does Millers XFE PD oil at £17.95 for 5 litres which is well below the Millers Recommended Retail Price of £26.38 plus VAT.

Costco do Mobil 1 @ £23.50
I beleve Costco also stocks the Chevron 505 rated at £11.70 or thereabouts
i.e. 50% off the Mobil price
|
Neither of which are for the PD - as they're not 505.01 rated.

Strange that. XFE-PD is apparently approved by VW...:-)

Was referring to the Mobil 1 and the Chevron. OK now?

Apologies Chevron is 505.00 not 505.01

Thats very interesting I did not know Comma was owned by Mobil Oil.
Presumably its the same oil in the Comma Can as the more expensive Mobil.
I have spoken to Mobil Customer Ralations who state that for
VW PD Engines 505.01 Spec they recommend the following,
>Mobil.SYNT.S.Special.V. 5w-40<
Does anyone know if this oil is sold in Costco,s ?
|
A Mobil representative would naturally recommend a Mobil oil...:-)

The Mobil oil sold at Costco is 0W/30 which is not suitable for PD engines, it is 505.00 not 505.01 or even 506.01 or 507.00.
Confusing, isn't it?
Just because Comma is owned by Mobil, it doesn't mean that the product is the same.

Saw 5L of Halfords own PD oil today for £21.32 (not sure if on offer or this is the standard price). No probs on the 505.01 spec as it states it clearly on the pack! This is seriously cheap where I live as the cheapest I've found prior to this is Millers XFE-PD at a smidge under £30 for 5L.
As an aside, be interested to know how come it's taken Halfords the thick end of 10 years to produce their own PD oil which should save the VAG punter a packet over the long run!!
Cheers

There's only a handful of oil companies operating in Western Europe now, plus a large number of small 'blenders' who buy in oil from the majors and buy in an additive pack and then blend it!
Comma oil is unlikely to be exactly the same stuff as you'd find in a Mobil can - the base oil is probably different - there is no problem with the quality of Comma oil though. At the end of the day, if it meets the spec, then it meets the spec, and you can safely use it! It has been submitted for approval and passed!

Halfords don't produce their own oil, they have it 'branded' by one of the big suppliers. They were probably waiting until DIY demand for PD oil built up to the level where sales volume would be high enough for them to get a supply at the right price.

Comma used to be the same as Esso, before they joined up with Mobil. Now I see Comma's website features Mobil oils too, which is a recent development.

easy answeer to that is : change in ownership and management in those 10 years.
www.halfordscompany.com/hal/ah/history/
halfords used to be part of a big group which included boots-the-chemist.
obviously such a diverse group does not have motorists needs as the main focus.
then with the takeover by a private equity group, it went through a radical change in attitude - both of staff and management.
....Two more changes of ownership followed with the Ward White Group purchasing the business in 1984 and then the acquisition of the Group by The Boots Company in 1989. ...
In August 2002, Halfords was acquired by CVC Capital Partners from The Boots Company.
....
In June 2004, Halfords was floated on the London Stock Exchange as a FTSE top 250 company.
Halfords employs approx. 9000 people supporting 402 stores in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
