Hi,
Having only done 270 miles(down from usual 310) on 42 litres of unleaded in the last week, i'm seriously considering making the switch to the oily stuff. Mush as i hate them, my wallet is taking a right bashing. I am wondering which is the best Diesel powered BMW 1 series to look at given the different trim levels and engines used. Is the 118d better than the 120d or vice-versa? If anybody has experience of these motors i'd be happy to read your views.
Thanks,
Mark

How many miles are you doing and what are you currently driving? 29mpg seems a bit thirsty for an equivalently sized petrol car, maybe you could try adapting your driving style somewhat? You're likely to cost yourself more in the change than you'll save on fuel.

Having drive the 1-series in Germany I can only suggest that you avoid it. A horrible car. The ride and handling are OK, but its very uncomfortable and claustrophobic. Even after just a short journey I was glad to get out. My left elbow was always banging the door. Rear seat accommodation is also poor. If you want a BMW then beg or borrow the extra to get a 3-series - its a far far better car.

Recently revised 118d is both more powerful than before (IIRC 140 v 120bhp) and (on paper) a lot more economical than the older 118d or the 120d. The latter is more powerful still though more importantly a lot more torquey.

I have an 05 E46 320d Estate with the 2 litre 150bhp engine. I drive it pretty hard and average 40mpg. The new 120d has the 163bhp engine and the 118d the 177 bhp. I think I'm right in saying the original versions were 135 and 163 respectively. I would imagine that more bhp will have an impact on mpg.

The 120d has been quoted as 163 bhp since launch, the 118d is now quoted as 143 bhp, previously 120, though is also claimed to be more economical.

Look for a nice used 330d E46 - you won;t regret it I can guarantee you !!!

I agree !
Although an Audi fan myself, that straight 6 diesel is a peach, and is more like a Rolls Royce Trent jet engine than a piston engine !

Thanks for your vaious info folks. Don't quite know what i'll do now having read all of above. Petrol v Diesel??? Can't adapt my driving style much more as i'll be going backwards! Have to have a long sit down and think about it. BTW, i'm driving a Civic Type-R very conservatively.

I've had a 120d sport for 2.5 years now and i love it. I still look forward to getting in it each day which is more than i can say for any other car I've had in the last 10 years. Fuel consumption isnt brilliant by VAG standards - I get about 40 (Less with enthusiatic Local driving - more on the m/way).
The ride is considered very hard, mainly as a result of the Run Flat Tyres. If you are looking for a car with loads of space in the back then look somewhere else, but that said myself,SWMBO, Pmajor, Pminor and the Springer Spaniel have been away for the weekend in it.
Unless you remap it up to 200bhp + more torque (I understand this is quite easy) it wont be as quick as the CTR, but should be a lot better, or certainly more rewarding in the twisty stuff.
As I say i love it, although not many here do (too small, too ugly bad ride) . You'll find a more appreciative bunch here:

If you do try one, make sure that you drive both an SE and a Sport and also 16in v 17in wheels, these both make a difference to the harshness of the ride.
If you have any more Q's let me know.

it always amuses me how some people expect others to be clones of themselves. these people don't seem to appreciate individual choice, likes and dislikes. it is one thing to say that in their own personal experience they found something unsuitable, but quite another to pour scorn on anyone who dares to have a different opinion.
personally, i find i like all bmws; and i think the 1 series is quite attractive looking and a pleasure to drive.
so, lazza, go ahead and buy one if you want one. these bmws go on forever even if you only service them every 20,000 miles on the motorway-miles-long-life-oil regime.

I think the 1 looks rather good - I thought it was awful when it first came out but now I'm a pretty enthusiastic Bangler. In fact I almost got one - 120d Sport, but SWMBO and darling daughter preferred the MCS we drove immediatley afterwards. I'm not complaining, mind... :-)
