I will tell you now, I have extremely limited experience of cleaning cars. What do I need to clean the inside of one, and how to clean grubby cloth, plastic, and trim?

Depends a bit on how much time, effort and money you want to throw at it. A thorough vacuuming, and a wipe over all surfaces with a damp cloth, glass cleaner for the windows and a scrubbing out of stains can be done with most household cleaners and it will look OK. For top results use car specific products. For a comprehensive guide on this and other aspects of cr cleaning I can recommend polishedbliss.com. Halfords or a good auto parts shop to pick up carpet and fabric shampoo, trim cleaner and restorer, glass cleaner etc. Autoglym stuff works well IMO and they have a product for everything. Microfibre cloths clean and polish better than anything else, Tesco sell them cheap.

Fairy liquid, fairly diluted with warm water and a hoover that can suck up water ok. Doesnt actually need to be any more complicated than that, just the marketers behind car cleaning products wanna sell you lots of overpriced muck.
I used to use car cleaning chemicals on interiors for my valeting business, but in actual fact, the vast majority of what I use now, ten years after qualifying, are household cleaners. 1001 carpet cleaner is great stuff and cheap.

Once a year I throw the car and my wallet at the local hand car wash place with instructions to keep anything that looks valuable, and bin the rest with the exception of anything that looks like it might be a new type of penicillin that's growing under the seats.

I used a concoction of meths, water, and washing-up liquid to clean the steering wheel and the "stalks". These are now smooth and clean, the water in the pail became very black! The surface of the wheel had been like very coarse black "orange peel", or surface-textured plastic, worn smooth where the hands rest during normal driving. I almost thought it was supposed to look like that, and that the shiny bits were where the surface had been rubbed smooth. Yuck.
Now I want to buy a "George". Any experience with one of these, and the carpet/upholstery cleaning kit which comes with it?

Use one of those dishwashing sponges to clean the steering wheel, gearshift, indicator and wiper levers and door handles - you'd be amazed at home much scurve and dandruff they attract over time.
Standard household furniture polish smells nice, and can be used on the instrument binnacle, the door handles etc.
AVOID, in my experience, any of that specialist 'carcare' polish - the last thing you want is a nice glowing dash to reflect the sun, street lights etc etc etc onto the windscreen. Just a wipe with a damp cloth will suffice.
If your seats and carpet are grubby, a stiff brush and household carpet/upholstery cleaner works ok. BUT then you have a lot of dampness in the car, so will get some lovely steamy windows.
Wait for hot days, and if you can leave windows open, is the best bet.
