Del Boy's Reliant - FP
I thought Backroomers might like to know that a much-loved, one might say iconic, vehicle is up for auction. It epitomised to a tee the character of Del Boy and is of course the Robin Reliant with "Trotters Independent Trading Co - New York-Paris-Peckham" written on the sides, from "Only Fools and Horses", as used in the series. Cost? Likely to be up to £20,000, they say.

Top Gear will buy it and fire it into space.

I have no idea why I posted this in Technical - should it be moved to Discussion, DD, or whoever is on duty today?

>>Robin Reliant

Arghh!
As if hearing Chris Evans perpetuate this belief wasn't enough the other night! ;-)

It is not, and there never has been, a Robin Reliant any more than there is a Mondeo Ford or an Astra Vauxhall.
The manufacturer was Reliant, and they did make a Robin, but Del Boy's was a Regal.
Del Boy's Reliant - FP
Sorry - you are of course absolutely right, as the story to which I gave the link shows. "Robin Reliant" just seemed to roll off the tongue, as it were. I suppose that's just what people said (for whatever reason) and it stuck, incorrect though it is - in two ways in this context.

Anyone who listens to Chris Evans for more than half a second deserves everything they get.

Well said, bring back Jonnie Walker.
Del Boy's Reliant - quizman
I meant Johnnie Walker, by the way, how many different Regals did Del Boy have?

It's a bit like wing mirrors.I haven't seen them for thirty-odd years.

THEY'RE DOOR MIRRORS!

Pedants unite.

Okay, I rise to the bait.
They're not shock absorbers, they are dampers.
Springs absorb the shocks.

What - Chivas Regals?
Del Boy's Reliant - FP
Del Boy apparently used three Reliant Regals (there - got the word order right! Somehow it's easier than "Reliant Robin"!) during the making of the series.

Unfortunately, as a passenger, I had little choice but to endure the Ginger One.

But there has also never been a Ford Model-T. The subject of which order to give has been discussed before IIRC, and the conclusion was that it's just coloquial variation.

A nice practical little car, the Regal. I had the posh version of Del's van with the side windows and a rear seat.

On a serious note, if all newly qualified drivers were restricted to a three wheeler for the first two years after passing their test the accident rate would fall dramatically. You can't drive like a prat or show off in one of those.

The scrapes under both sides of their noses bear witness that you can have a jolly good try though...

In their day I think that the Morgan three wheelers, particularly the Aero, were pretty sporty and good fun. The Berkeley were also rather fun in a very basic way. As for driving like a prat - some people seem to have a natural talent for it and could manage it in any vehicle.

Ah! the JAP engined Morgan three-wheeler..! A fellow-student at Swansea Art College had one of them in the early 60s..it went like 'soot' off a shovel, and having the two wheels at the front I recall it was very stable during cornering. Didn't the Berkeley have the single front wheel, a-la Reliant?

Here is a mystery inside a puzzle wrapped in an enigma.

On the forecourt of a car accessories showroom in the northern Spanish town of Irun , on top of a pole about 10 feet high, is Reliant Robin registration number LTF 59K. Fascinates me. I wonder who parked it so badly.

You speak for yourself. I most certainly did the first while trying to do the second.

When I was at Uni in Brighton, we were once sat bored in a lecture, staring out of the window at the traffic down on Lewes Road, when a recovery truck drove past with Del Boys' Capri and the yellow Reliant on the back, which brightened our day up.
The next day we heard from someone that the Reliant had been spotted up on the allotments behind their house, so a load of us went up there in my mates Landrover, and we got camcorder footage of Grandad and Rodders and the production crew all standing around bored and freezing.
We didnt talk to any of the crew but had a chat with some weird identically dressed women who were obsessed fans who followed them around everywhere. They were filming the "Peckham Spring" Bottled Water episode, I've still got our footage on VHS somewhere, but its extremely boring...
Del Boy's Reliant - John S
No it wasn't a Robin, but it wasn't a Regal either! (Dons anorak) Was it not actually a Reliant Supervan?? (Takes off anorak) No, I didn't know that. Someone told me - honest!
