206 coil pack - wiring - chewymix
Hi

It seems that a knocking from my 206 may actually be coming from a shorting coil pack - Its a black plug model but can anyone confirm for me how many wired are used in this plug as i dont have a wiring diagram. The plug has 4 wires, 3 coloured and 1 black, however the black wire exits the plug for about 3 inches and thats it, it is not connected to the wiring loom at all. I have hunted around near the other cables in the bundle to see if it had snapped but there are only 2 coloured wires going into the loom.

Can anyone confirm if this black wire is indeed not needed?

thanks

Can't say that I've ever heard a coilpack knocking; but...

Peugeot fitted many and various engines and electronic systems in these - around thirty permutations.

What exact year; what engine and what are the central group of letters in the VIN number. [Just post the letters.]

its a 99 1.6 XS - i dont have the VIN at the moment -

However annoyingly i took a look myself today and removed the 'faulty' coil pack and found the left hand sparkplug was loose in the head. Tightening this and lo and behold the knocking is gone so now i have a coil pack to flog on ebay!

I think next time i will get my tools out myself rather than relying on mechanics.

thanks

If your original coilpack is a Sagem one; [marked on the underside] and your new one is a Bougicord: then sell [or bin] the old one and fit the new. Sagem coils are notorious for spiking the ECU's on these through their weird "phase detection" circuit.

well i have not looked at the current 1 fitted but this new one is completely blank - there are no markings on the black casing at all so i have no idea what brand it is - The only thing is a sticker on the box it came in that reads ES-097 - i dont suppose anyone has an idea on what this could be do you?

thanks

Did you buy it from the dealers?

I didnt no - i bought it from a spares store that specialises in ford and peugeot parts - it is new though and not one from a breaker

Hmm; an unbranded part is a completely unknown quantity. Can't say whether it's worth fitting or not. Can you send it back?

i suppose i could yes - i didnt even think about the brand when i bought it to be honest, and it seems to be running fine even without the black wire connected so i have no idea what that is for!! Perhaps its a leftover from a previous ignition setup this loom shares or something.

A Motronic 7.2 uses 4 wires to the coil; one, [pin 4] goes to earth through a suppressor block [white - matchbox sized?] bolted to one of the coil mounting studs. That may have gone missing.

interesting thanks - can i ask what would be the downside of loosing this earth?

Difficult to be certain; probably nothing much. Only some had them.
