As per my other post, I am shortly going to buy a new smaller car.
I currently have a 1998 Nissan QX 2.0 Auto that I will need to sell. The car has only done 49,000 and it has been probably the best car that i have owned in 30 years of motoring! It is genuinely in showroom condition, not a mark on it inside or out, and has never given me the slightest problem and drives like new - in fact if I had the room I would keep it.
My problem is how to sell it. It would be heartbreaking to send it into an auction and get peanuts for it. No one will want it in P/X so I suppose a private sale is best. Would Ebay work? Or what about Autotrader?
How much is a pristine '98 QX going to be worth?
|
I would imagine a QX will not be popular on the used market :( Big cars never are, and this is quite unknown as Joe Bloggs may worry about getting spares (what happens if a wing get smashed etc).
This car will probably be worth more to you than anybody else, but if you have time you should be able to sell it to a buyer who wants the car for what it is. I have no idea what is worth but I would guess around £1000-£1200.

Sounds terrific, lollop silently over the speed bumps, I'm almost tempted but I think it might drink a bit more than my present car...

First it depends if it is an S or an SE as theres a few hundred quid difference as the SE has the more desirable spec. Yes try Autotrader, its the place you will get the highest price. Ebay will knock your car hard on value.
Advertise it carefully ( ie present the car well ) and it should sell. Depending on which model it is, id say anywhere between £1500 and £1900 - if its the SE id start at £1895 and take a few hundred off, the S £1695 etc.
|
Its an SE. Got climate control, sunroof etc etc. It doesn't really need any work to present it - I clean and wax it every two weeks and always park away from other cars at the supermarket - there is not a scratch or dent on it - not even a tiny one. We never eat food or chocolate in it etc. Its been my pride and joy.
Its dead easy to drive and a very quiet and smooth cruiser. Only 22mpg around town unfortunately but it does an easy 28-30mpg on a run. I bought it for the space and large boot (much cheaper than an MPV and almost as roomy). But circumstances have changed now and I only need a small car.
If someone wants a car like this then they will buy it as soon as they see it, it has a private plate and lots of people have thought it was only 2-3 years old, but its a case of getting to that person that wants one.

If this post had appeared last November I would be making you an offer on it!! I was choosing between an Accord or a QX, but an Accord came up at the right price first - shame as yours sounds like a nice car and at about the same price/age I was looking at ;o(

These cars were unpopular when new because the depriciation was horrendous, nothing to do with the cars abilities and at this price range, if I was selling the car, i would be very confident of selling it within a week. The key is the advert and how you present it. If you write a rubbish advert, people wont ring, thats always the key to selling privately.
There are more educated fans of large japanese saloons that you may think. I drove a Toyota Camry V6 auto for a week a while back and it was just superb.

Stunorthants26 you are right. I like big Japanese cars. They are really well built and very hard wearing. At the weekend I went to look at 1-2 year old cars at a car supermarket and most looked more worn that my QX, even with half the mileage. The paint and trim on recent cars does not seem to last. The paint on the QX is really tough and glossy. I only have a handful of small stonechips on the front, after all these years. I looked at a Mondeo with 20k on it and only 1 year old and it had masses of chips on the front and lots of little scars on the paintwork.

Absolutely cracking cars. They sold by the shedload in the US and have a reputation for never going wrong. I can never understand why they don't fetch higher prices in the UK. Easy to work on and parts are not too bad (not that you need many). PS rack, wheel bearings, cat etc all the same as on P11 Primera. Brake parts are easily obtainable from factors are reasonable prices.

QXMan, the way you describe your car makes me feel you will be heartbroken to sell. What exactly is prompting the sale? Is there no way round it as I feel you are going to feel disappointed with your next car even though you are looking at a Subaru - the thinking driver's car.

"There are more educated fans of large japanese saloons that you may think"
Indeed. I just bought a Mazda Xedos in cracking condition for £600, but it could easily have been a Camry or QX. This may not be what you want to hear, of course, but I suspect you will get a better price from a classified ad or just an A4 sheet behind the glass, if you can park it somewhere visible. Good luck - I would have been tempted...

My sister had a 3 litre one, it really was a lovely car. Big, wafty, leather barge, everything I love in a car. It wasn't that quick though.
They still sell them in the States, there seems to be one parked on every drive in Wysteria Lane. (Yes I watch Desperate Housewives, so what?)
|
You won't get much more than 22mpg around town or 30mpg on a run from an Imprezza, so if running costs are your main consideration, the OP could be as well to stick with a car he knows and clearly loves - especially as the cost to change is going to be quite high.
I'm unclear as to why space is a problem - surely a QX fits into a standard parking bay? If a small garage is the problem, you may well find anything bigger than a Jazz or Clio has difficulty fitting in, judging from past comments posted here.
Time for the measuring tape and calculator to come out, methinks...

Why does the right car always come at the wrong time.........................?
|
Thanks for all the responses.
The size of the QX is not really too much of an issue. I do very little city driving, its mainly A-roads, and I have a large garage and parking space at work. I guess the REAL reason that I am selling is that I'm approaching 50 years old and fancy something that's a little sporty before I get TOO old.
I had a drive in a new Subaru Impreza yesterday and was very impressed. Its not as quiet and comfortable as the QX but you can really feel the effect of the 4WD and the quick steering.
I am hoping to get a parallel import, but because I want a particular specification I won't get the car for another four months! So I'll be driving the QX for a bit longer. I will probably try to sell it the other side of Easter. It will need an Mot then, so I'll be selling it with full MoT which should make it easier.

Hello again.
A little update.
Well, my new Impreza 2.0RX is on order and should be here in late June.
I've had the QX MoT'd (end of March) and its now up for sale if anyone is interested...
I found a couple of stone chips at the edge of one of the doors (son opened against a wall last week!!) so just dropped it off at the local bodyshop to have those professionally re-touched. Otherwise completely free of the usual knocks and dings (my wife and I are IAM members and those oddball types that always park at the far end of the supermarket car park!!). Wash and wax with Autoglym at least every month.
1998 Nissan QX 2.0 24V SE Automatic. Pristine example in Gunmetal Grey, guaranteed genuine 50800 miles. FSH. Guaranteed HPI clear etc. Brilliant car, 100% relaible for last four years. Asking £1850 . Please e-mail on qxman2007 (at) safe-mail (dot) net if interested. Near Hinckley, Lecestershire (LE9 postcode, not far from M69).

Excellent cars! You should sell that easily enough - there are a few 'big Jap' car enthusiasts out there. Also as a 'people mover' I think they make a lot more sense than a clapped out Previa or Delicia.
|
Quite extraordinary! After reading Aprilia's comments I became interested in the QX and a couple of weeks ago asked the mod to pass an email to you asking you to contact me when you were going to sell yours. I heard nothing so looked elsewhere and on Friday bought one on ebay, a 2001 3.0 SE Plus with 64k and all the bells and whistles. Obviously wasn't meant to be! Good luck with your sale.
{Just to confirm, I forwarded the email as requested to qxman on 31 March 2007 at 20:29 - DD}

Just curious, how much do you pay to have the paint chips touched up?

A local bodyshop is charging me £100, which is apparently their minimum charge.

Hi
I had major problems with my previous e-mail account and no longer use it - hence I never got to read your e-mail. Sorry.
Best wishes with the 2001 model you have bought. I'm sure you will be delighted with it. Had Nissan continued to sell these cars after 2002 (when they withdrew it from the UK) then I would DEFINITELY be replacing mine with another low mileage used example. There is nothing to touch them for the money in my opinion. They are extremely well built and reliable.

Care to update it then?

I had one 2 years ago, had it advertised at £1295 (P Reg) for 2 months; not 1 call ! Traded it in the end; glad to see the back of it. Dealer I traded it to had it for ages also. It was not a bad example and looked good in black also.

I think one in good nick with sensible mileage and history will sell OK. There are a lot of these around with mega-mileage and whilst they do take the miles very well, buyers are obviously put off by anything into (or approaching) six figures.
