My wife has osteoporosis and feels pain from every bump when travelling in our Micra. Can anyone suggest a small family car that irons out bumps considerably better? I've read that previous Citoen C4s were renowned for a soft ride but that the current model is remarkably firm. Would the new Nissan Qashqai be a possibility?

You probably won't find any Qashqai owners on here, because I don't think any have rolled out of the showroom yet. The ride is, apparently, quite good though. The VW Golf, supposedly has quite a comfy ride, but I'd avoid any cars renowned for their handling (Focus or the new Civic for example) because they'll have firm suspension. Alternatively, maybe a small 4x4, like a Rav4 or something may offer more by way of springyness.
My mum has osteoporosis too, and she's always said the ride in my Galant is particularly good.

A hydropneumatic Citroen is the way to go.

Must admit C5 was what immediately came to mind when I read this yesterday -- in general larger cars will handle bumps better than smaller ones almost by definition. Are you absolutely set on a little car? I've found most tend to be crashy.
One exception is one of the older-model Hyundais (Accent, Elantra), these were wallowy but the flip-side of that is a smooth ride compared to most other cars.

Sounds to me like you need a bigger car, and a C5 would sound like a perfect fit given it's floating on air suspension.
You could always try a non-sporty model of a car like a Focus, I seem to remember the Ghia model having quite a smooth compliant ride.

Don't know if I would touch any of the current Nissan range. Too much blasted Renault in 'em. . . . . . . My experience with my Primera has been horrendous.

C5 would be perfect. Super ride and seat comfort.
