Golf '02 Mk4 with water in rear Footwell - kerf
Please help. I have a 2002 Mk4 Golf 1.6SE and have a pond in my near side rear footwell. There is no water anywhere else and I am perplexed. Took it to VW who kindly charged me £80 and said they had looked for one hour and could find nothing. More likely had a cup of tea and charged me for the experience. Their latest suggestion is that I pay them £320 for four hours work and they will have another look. This time they will take the carpet up. I have now cleaned it up twice but this is not very good. I do not have a sunroof, could someone please help me.

{The author of this post has mentioned there was a typo in this message. Just to clarify he meant a 2002 Mk4 Golf, and not a 1992 Mk4 Golf. The error (as you can see) has now been corrected - DD}

Pollen filter again?

KERF:

Get this water out ASAP as VW's house electrics under the passenger seat which will cost hundreds if they get wet.

VW's have a well known fault with the pollen filter gasket under the bonnet with the result that water shoots down the ducts into the rear footwells. Passats, Jettas, they all have it.

I found this when my neighbour came back from two weeks away to find his yr 2000 Passat rear footwells full of water.

Let me know how you get on but get that water out quick!!!

Also meant to say that any VW dealership claiming that they need four hours to find what sounds like a very very well known VW design fault is at best ignorant or at worst just a rip off merchant! Either way I'd give them a very wide berth indeed.

Then clear all the drain holes in the plenum chamber.

If the car is a 1992 model its not a MK4, its either a very late (and rare) MK2) or an early MK3.

Would a 92 golf have a pollen filter.

As it could be any one of three different cars there's not much point commenting until OP confirms which car he owns, my later MK3 estate has a pollen filter

I would check two things. Firstly the undeneath of the car for any rust hole that might be letting rain in as the car is driven. Then secondly I would check the door membrane - a very common failing on older VW's, not sure whether VW have cured the problem on later ones.

When I once had this problem with a 1990 "big bumper" Jetta the cause was, as Xileno {P} suggests, the door membranes.

Apparently at the time said door membranes were not of the normal quality and the VW outlet that did the work replaced all of them - never suffered it again.

If it's a Mk3 clear out the dead leaves etc from the plenum chamber.

Hi,

Could you let me know the plenum chamber is as that would be really helpful.

Thansk you very much

Very sorry it is a 2002

Just so you know - leaving the windows open etc will not dry out under the carpet. I have actually taken my carpet and underlay out of my car (A SEAT, but same difference) and it was absoutely sodden. The carpet felt dry to the touch.

The telling sign was that my CD wallet was alwaya damp on the side facing the floor.

Seeing as its a mk4 Golf it will also be a good idea to remove both the inner wing plastic liners & clear the pile of dirt & rotten leaves out from each side, another designed in rust trap in a few years time!

Hey mss1tw

Did you sort out your leak? was it the windscreen?

I'm hearing more and more of this particular issue, I had it with my Bora (Windscreen), it could be the Battery drain hole (underneath Battery - but to be honest I think this only affects Passats). It could be the Sunroof blocked drain holes, or the Pollen Filter. (Most likely).

The other possibility that I heard when I was researching the problem (But only in Golf Mk4) was that the rear wiper mechanism body seal fails and water gushes into the boot and then into the footwells.

Does your Toledo have a rear washwipe?

Hey Charles, no not yet! I need to do the doors first then take yet another look at the pollen filter area. It's not got a rear wash wipe.

I took it to a windscreen place who did some bits with some liquid and an airline, they didn't think that it was the screen. It was £200 odd for a new screen - to much to just try it on a whim, sadly!

Stuart,

Thanks for your posting. I have managed to get the pollen filter out and it looks ok. You advised me that it may be the pollen filter gasket. I bought a Heynes manual but it doesn't say how to get to and change the gasket. Do you know how to do this or where I can find out how to do it.

Thanks for your help.
