The Mongol Rally - London to Ulaan Bataar, some 9 -10,000 miles over varied terrain - in a car with engine with NO MORE than one litre of power. What car would you use?

Don't know their engine sizes but provided they were eligible

Panda 4x4
Subaru Justy 4x4
Lada Samara 4x4

Panda is under 1 litre, Justy is a 1.2 and the Lada is a 1.6.

Peugeot 205 1.0
Nissan Micra 1.0
Citroen 2CV ( some people went rallying in them so must be something in it! )

Much as I love the 848 and other sub-1 litre Minis I'll have tha Panda thanks. I guess a really good 602cc 2CV wd be OK too.

Pity its restricted to sub 1litre. I fancy a 2CV with the 1.3 GS engine.

From the above i'd go for the pug 205 1.0 litre. Had a C reg till last year. Soft suspension and strong engine will cope with the rough terrain also very easy to fix.

Possibly a Fiat Panda 4x4.. as they come in 4 wheel drive.

Its not what you drive, its how you drive it! :-)

Skoda Estelle 1174cc which is near enough 1 litre.
Maybe I could skim the head.

Actually there is I believe a sub-1-litre Estelle. Crap on British main roads, just the thing for that.

The team I know of are doing this in a pre-2003 micra bought from ebay!

How about a pre-1993 micra? They seem to keep going with little or no maintanence, so if you gave it a service first it should just keep going.

Or how about a 998cc nova, mine made it to 192k and despite a lack of servicing (more sludge in the sump than oil) the engine kept going. Well it kept going wrong but could still be driven.

Only thing with the nova idea is you would need to take welding gear with you to stick the shell back together.

smart for me. There was a smart rally spec car which survived something similar.

845cc Renault 4? I used to dread being picked up from school in one but it didn't often go wrong. 20-litre fuel tank might not be ideal, though.

Easy - a Haflinger.

you can have a litre of milk but if you want power that usually only comes in watts

I just thought I would up-date this. The two girls bought an R reg. electric blue Micra for £200 at auction. They completed the rally in five weeks with no mechanical problems and were quite sad when they had to leave it behind - a condition of the rally.

Excellent choice of car, and really good result too! This has to be a good advert for the reliability of pre-Renault Nissans. An absolute bargain price too, even for auction.
