peugeot 106 rear brake problem - escortgti
Hi All,

My wife has a puegeot 106 1.5 diesel which has just developed a brake problem.

When you brake the car dips at the back as if most of the braking is being done by the back brakes, if braking really hard then the back passenger wheel locks up, does anyone know what could be causing this problem?
The brakes including handbrake cable were all replaced last year. any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

In the event of any braking problem, I would normally advise a complete and thorough inspection. Assuming everything is in order, your case might just be the exception as I've seen this problem before.

One supplier of linings for these Bendix drum brakes uses a material which is both highly hygroscopic and which also causes the linings to snatch when they are damp. It doesn't take a lot - just parking the vehicle with the back end in driving rain is enough. The remedy is to drive the vehicle a few yards with the handbrake partly on, then release it and use the brakes a few times. Everything should then become normal.

I maintain a 106D for a friend and have experienced this after fitting these linings myself - it's alarming and could be dangerous if a vehicle is driven straight out into the road and then the brakes are used at speed. So much for PSA quality control; the linings I used were - Bendix.
