On my 406 HDi,there is a tick tick tick noise, coming from the top of the engine, behind the black plastic cover on the block.
My local garage, used a Snap On stethescope,to listen to it,and found the location of the noise. It only happens when the engine is idling, and once you let the revs rise,it disappears.Tbe infamous bottom crank pulley is ok,and until he starts to strip it,he can't be precise as to what it could be,only a theory.
The timing belt was changed only 17k miles ago,so a deteriorating belt due to mileage,it would appear,is not an option.
Any ideas?

Was the water pump changes when the timing belt was done?

It certainly was, because the garage that did the belt, gave me the old parts back as proof he had changed what he charged me for.

Dropped car off at 07.45 this morning, and they rung me at 09.10,to say that they've taken the belts off, fired the engine up,and the noise is not there, but there is serious movement in the bottom crank pulley!!!!! Went and had a look, and the amount of movement in the bottom crank pulley,is unbelievable.
Now as the local extremely well known motor factors didn't have one in,and couldn't get one today, unfortunately I had to line the pocket of the local Peugeot dealer,to the tune of £142,including vat, which kinda hacks you off, when you know you can get an identical part, for half the price elsewhere.
However,as I need the car straight away,I had to pay it,but I suppose I now have the knowledge that a genuine part has been fitted,it does soften the blow somewhat.
Hopefully that is the end of the saga, but I'll know in an hour or two,and will post back.

Everything sorted now,and my engine only makes the sort of noise it should.
