Clio Mk2 Bonnet Problem - Fiddy Shilling
Hi,

According to reports on last night's Watchdog, there could be a problem with the catches on Clio Mk2 bonnets. I sat with mounting horror trying to imagine the scenario presented on the programme, namely that at high speeds it is possible for the bonnet to fly open without warning and for it to smash the windscreen and block your front view.

The programme mentioned that Clio drivers could assume that they have fully closed the bonnet, but that the catch can get stuck in the open position.

Is this something I should be concerned about and if so, should I contact renault? Renault refused to acknowledge a link between the many separate incidences of such a situation that had been reported to Watchdog, and furthermore, were not considering a recall.

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

My advice?

The problems is - 'but that the catch can get stuck in the open position'

On 1 level you could check thoughly that your bonnet has closed properly before stting off, so even if the above problem occured in your car you would not be put in danger.
On another level you need to get renault to act - write off to Which a consumer magazine, Renault themselfs or maybe to the Watchdog program itself.
If you want to mobilse support post about this problem on forums (which you are doing) and get people reading your posts to try one of my 2 above points, or point them towards an online petition?

On other note I have a P reg mark 1 clio. The first time I came to open the bonnet it stumped me since it opened the wrong way. The may have saved me though, I was rumaging about under the bonnet before a long motorway trip and forgot (I left it because I thought I wanted it up again, but could not be bothered to unlock the car agained etc to pull the bonnet release) to close the bonnet all the way, so it just rested in the down position. Anyway I set off on this journey and I get 10 minutes up the motorway before I realise that my bonnet was not shut. Stopped damn quickly after that and closed the bonnet properly
