car alarm - P.Mason {P}
A 4WD parked about 50 yards up the road, in a residential street, has had its car alarm (20 one-second horn blasts every minute) going off since ten this morning. It's annoying from my house,-it must be unbearable in nearby properties. I should think that several people have already informed the police, but I seem to recall that they aren't allowed to touch the car to switch it off. Have any Backroomers come across this problem, if so, what was the outcome?
There it goes again...!

In Leeds a car in a nearby street had the alarm going off every 20 minutes. Especially annoying as the alarm lasted 15 minutes and cycled through various annoying sirens. The next morning I walked past to discover all the windows smashed and interior wiring ripped out. :)

Have you tried the local council? Noise pollution is something they usually look at.

I called the 'non-urgent' police number, - the sympathetic lady officer took details and said that they would try and contact the registered owner. Hopefully it's a commuter who will move it soon anyway.
Can't hear it at the moment, which is a hopeful sign...

From Bedford Borough Council web site:

Sometimes it is possible for the Environmental Health Unit to take action to silence continually sounding car alarms.

A typical situation is where a car has been parked in a residential road or car park whilst the owner is absent, perhaps for several days.

The Environmental Health Unit will attempt to trace the owner or driver of the car in order to advise them of the situation. The Officer will visit the complainant and hear for themselves the effect of the noise.

If the alarm is not silenced by the owner, the Officer may be able to attend with a contractor to silence the alarm, or remove the vehicle to a secure area. The car owner will be charged for the costs incurred.

If you are disturbed by a car alarm which has been repeatedly sounding for some time, contact the Environmental Health Unit. However, you must be prepared for a resolution to take several hours as we must attempt to trace the owner before making arrangements with a contractor and the Police to take action ourselves. We will keep you informed of progress.

Having heard no alarm for a couple of hours, I assumed the car had been moved. Went out at about 8 last night to find the offending car still there, indicators flashing weakly, obviously not enough juice in the battery to sound the horn, and probably not enough to start the car.
Thanks for all the input.
