Is the photo of Honest John, Honest John?
I thought Honest John was a consortium of car experts who write for the Telegraph, but since there seem to be posts from a member called Honest John (HJ) I'm a little confused!

I went to a Backroom 'Meet' in North London some years ago and HJ was there complete with trademark hat. I think he might be a bit like Terry Pratchett who, becasue we have only ever seen him with his hat on, is not recognised in public when he goes out without it.

Same goes for 'mimsers' driving elderly Volvo's ...although their attire is normally of the flat variety.

I wonder how many years HJ has been in the car trade? How old would that make him - his accumulated knowledge is quite amazing!

The new hat is vaugely UB40 influenced so that might date him to being a child of the 70s.

I saw HJ on Sky recently and can confirm he bears more than a striking resemblance to the chap in the picture. HJ was as usual making well informed comments, this time on the subject of congestion charge increases for 4x4s. That other well known motoring commentator and pseudo environmentalist, Bamber Gascoigne was also being asked for his views but like the author of this thread he was more interested in uncovering HJ's true identity. Not a chance!

When I suggested once for a joke, ages ago, that HJ was only the creation of a Daily Telegraph committee, my post was deleted as being in poor taste.
Or may be it was my revelation that the picture had been lifted from a catalogue advertising gentlemen's hats?
As a matter of fact I think the new photo makes him look more honest - I never did quite trust that twinkle in the old one - it reminded me of someone who'd put old nylons in a gearbox!

What I keep wondering is whether the chequered hatband in the most recent photo is some kind of coded signal. No offence of course HJ. Feeling nicely mellow I trust in the charming far east.
