Peugeot 406 2.0 HDI noises - what? - walter plinge
Hi,
I have a X reg Peugeot 406 2.0 HDi Est which has suddenly started making some funny knocking noises. The noises originate from the side of the engine with the belts on (offside?) and are intermitant in such that can drive for 5 miles with no problem, but will then suddenly start knocking quite loudly. When it starts, it won't stop until car has been left for a couple of hours. It's quite hard determining exactly where the knock is coming from by sticking head under the bonnet, but could possibly be the power steering pump. It sounds like a metalic knock /rattle and follows engine speed. Power steering is currently fine however. How do I go about determining where this ominous sound is really coming from. Any way of checking the pump / alternator etc individually? Any help and / or advice would be greatfuly received.
Regards,
wally.

Could be the bottom crank pulley or harmonic balancer to give it the correct Peugeot name.

The outer ring off metal on the pulley is bonded to the inner ring with a rubber damper, said damper fails & it can / will throw the belts off & snap the timing belt too.

Really needs to be checked out before the engines run anymore.

Mate at Pug had 406 with 1.9 TD lump do this today, pulley broke up, it threw the belts off & snapped the camshaft.

This could be the dual-mass crank pulley coming apart. Have you found a thin strip of metal anywhere near the belts.

Thanks for the replies leePower and ScrewLoose.
This doesn't sound good. I haven't seen a small piece of metal anywhere. I will try to book it in with a garage tomorrow. Where would i look to check for this i.e. under the car or through the wheel arch area. I have a trusty, but as of yet unused, Haynes manual which I am trying to read through. All three and four star jobs which is way above my head.
Assuming it is the bottom crank pulley self destructing (forgot to mention car has 104K on clock) could you give a guess as to repair bill. Three days after Christmas and the credit cards are groaning, 4 weeks to pay day etc.
Would appreciate if this is this something my small local garage could take on, or should I go to Pug dealer?
Regards,
wally

Crank pulley is less then £70 from dealer, maybe GSF or Euro car parts sell them cheaper ( I dont know if they do but worth a check )

Way to tell if the bottom pulley is on the way out, time the engine up as for a cambelt change, if the bottom crank timing hole doesnt line up with the rest of the timing marks / holes then you know the harmonic balancer ( fancy name for the bottom pulley ) needs replacing.

I changed the lower crank-shaft pulley last night, this is the second one my car (xsara hdi 106k miles) has needed the first under warranty. When the pulley starts to go it can deteriorate quite quickly. Apparently there are lot of very low quality replacement parts around so it is best to get a quality part if possible (specialist told me he bough a batch for £30 and ended up replacing them all a few thousand miles later). Its quite an easy job for a mechanic, it takes nearly as long to take the splash guard on and off.
