HDI injectors (again!) - volcane
Hi All

A very Merry Christmas to one and all!!

After reading all the common rail problems and feeling rather smug with my largely fault free hdi (recently anyway, it had a new turbo just before the warranty ran out) I felt my car was down on power and seemed to surge at about 2600 rpm. I got a lend of a Bosch diagnostic system and found that two injectors were over compensating, I think the readings were 1.1, 3.6, 3.8, 1.0 for injectors 1,2,3,4 respectively. The car is a xsara 110 bhp Bosch system 106k miles. The Bosch number on the injectors finishes with 076 and they are Z I'm told their part no. is 1980 H9.

my questions:

Can I use any other part no. eg 1980 H7 X

Will getting my own injectors reconditioned be as good as buying new?

Any recommendations for new injectors and for recon work

How difficult a job is to change the injectors myself, I realise that it is critical to do it correctly.

Thanks for any advice help

Friend of mine who repairs diesels often uses United Diesel for recon injectors - he always recommends new, but if customer is on a budget then he will fit recons. They are in Shropshire but will do mail order.

I don't think these engines are a DIY proposition due to the pressures and specialist procedures involved.

There's 19 500 + PSI of fuel pressure in those under bonnet metal pipes when the HDI systems at full working pressure, mess about with it at your own risk!

One for a diesel specialist I think

The only problem with non-Bosch recon HDi injectors is that the only bit that has been replaced on these is the tip and these only wear after huge mileages. The part that causes the rattle under load that wears on these is the solenoid control and control rod inside the injector and these are not touched.
Like Aprilla said, always use new (EDC15 HDi injectors new from Bosch are actually Factory refurbished jobs now I hear)

Very interesting, as I type my injectors are with a company in Co. Cavan being reconditioned (I live in N.Ireland) their website is www.des.ie , they assured me that my injectors will be as good as exchange units. It was a simple job to remove the injectors, I hope refitting goes as well.

There was a delay in obtaining the correct nozzles but I refitted the injectors this evening. A relatively simply job if you are careful and meticulous (which I am), The car is noticeably quiter and smoother running.

Hi i was just wondering how much it cost for your injectors sorted?

I have two injectors rattling and want to know the best way to sort them. The two local diesel specialists aren't keen because they dont want to take them out of the head (because they might stick) but someones gona have to take them out

My engine managment light came on which was read as low oil pressure and injectors not spraying. I had this cleared and it came on again today so ill take it in and see what it says this time.

If i were to get replacements from another engine for example what numbers need to match? Obviously the part number but will the ecu recognise this?

cheers

Hi

My injectors cost £330 in total to get sorted, more than I expected but cheaper than new. Have you looked on e-bay often new or recon injectors for sale there. The company that did my injectors said that those on the HDi rarely are difficult to remove, mine came away with only light hand force required. The Haynes manual said that new pipes would be required on refitting again my diesel specialist said that they wouldn't be required. New washers (on the bottom of the injector)are needed when refitting
I carefully cleaned around the injectors using brake cleaner and air before removing, I used sandwhich bags to cover all electrical and fuel connectors as they were disconnected being particularly careful with the common rail. I cleaned the head after removing the injectors being careful not to get too much junk into the cylinders (I blocked the small hole that the injector nozzle sits with a pen then used air along with medical cleansing wipes!!!) When refitting I applied a light coating of copper grease along the shaft of each injector. If you are careful it isn't that big a job on a hdi.

goodluck

thanks for the reply

i really wana get mine sorted the engine managment light will keep comming on and they are really starting to rattle now!

if i manage to find some with the same part number will they go straight in? I dont want any problems with the ecu etc
HDI injectors (again!) - volcane
I don't think they are coded into the ecu, so should go straight in ok. Other people have said that it doesn't matter what they are as long as they are all the same.
