Xantia front suspension - lolingram
Just joined the Forum.

I have recently bought a low mileage (75kmiles) Xantia TD Estate in very good condition - has bog stadard non Activa suspension. However, on motorways mainly, travelling over undulations will induce a mild front end floating that is not present on either of my other 2 Xantias.

Ride is otherwise very good and handling OK.

Any help much appreciated.

I once had a BX which went sort of "floaty" at the front. It turned out to be the front height corrector. I have also had the rear end of a BX go "floaty". The local indy traced it to the spheres going "soft". They usually fail hard but he said they occaisionally go the other way. I don't understand why. He changed the rear spheres and it cured it.

How old are the spheres? Are they the correct spheres for the application?

Front strut unit rubber / metal mounts ok? These can fail & shoot the strut unit straight up through the bonnet!

How often is the clicking from the under bonnet solenoid for the accumulator sphere, should be at least 30 seconds between clicks.

Xantia suspension is very reliable if its been looked after.

Spheres could well be original - 1997R reg/75KMiles - pretty sure that they haven't been changed recently. Strut rubber mounts look just fine. No noticeable clicking from the accu sphere.
My previous Citroen spheres got really bumpy before needing to be changed - usually circa 120KMilkes...? This is the opposite!

Another oddity is that when the engine is freshly started from cold, the boost is just fine; after it warms up the top end boost is lack-lustre, but the turbo can be heard whizzing away nevertheless - seems like not enough diesel being injected at the top of the rev range when hot. Filters and the usual stuff check out OK.

Engine is 1.9 XUD with mechanical Bosch injection, but has cat and EMU.

Any thoughts?

Many thanks.

Spheres over 9 years old, change them.

Should really be done every 4 years, doesnt cost much either for a new set.

Accumulator sphere solenoid should have at least a 30 second gap between the clicks.

Reason being that's the safety back up pressure sphere in case of hydraulic lose so you can still stop the car using the brakes & also if that accumulator sphere is worn out the hydraulic pump will work a lot harder trying to pressurise it up & wont really last too long so you would end up with a worn out / broken pump too.

Thanks Lee - I guessed this might be it, but good to have someone knowledgeable confirm it. The accu shere seems OK, as the clicking is pretty infrequent - also the car pumps up from cold within seconds so pump must be good.

For the time being I'll change just the front ones...

Now awaiting the diesel expert!

Thanks again.
