My friend has just purchased a R registered Saxo 1.1 from a small garage. The garage have replaced the airbag but the dashboard check light does not go out. They have advised him that it will go out after the car has been started a number of times - I don't think this sounds plausible - can any backroomers offer any advice?

Don't know about how to cure the problem although there has been mention with other cars (peugeots) that these lights can be due to faulty wiring under the drivers seat.
However, having said that, I would be extremely surprised if any garage had changed an airbag on a R Reg Saxo, unless it was a write-off rebuld?

Did your friend check the car with HPI to see if it was on their write-offs "hit list?" If the airbag was replaced because it had deployed; then it's had a big impact.
The usual airbag fault on these is indeed the plug connexions under the seats. The gold connectors get contaminated with silicone residue exuding from the seat foam. A good squirt of electrical contact cleaner soon sorts that out.
Either way; it wants the airbag fault-codes reading to see what's stored. If it has deployed, it'll need a new airbag ECU and possibly other components too.

Hello I had the same problem a few days ago. here are all the correct things that can happen.
First when you start the engine does it flash then go solid a few moments later? Maybe 5-10 mins?
The garage believe it or not is right, mine came for about 4 days, then went. Recently came back to the same effect "Went again".
My saxo then lost its lights in random places including the cockpit, so its best to take it a garage and ask them to check your fuses, as one of mine went.
Also moving the drivers seat is the cause of this problem 50% of the time. If so then it usually goes away in 3-4 days of starting the engine.
If the problem still hasnt gone away, problem being "Airbag light" then go to the garage like I said and get the fuses checked.

Thanks for all the advice so far. I don't know a lot about my friend's purchase but I do know the airbag had deployed when he first saw the car and that it had had some bodywork repairs before he bought it.
I'm concerned that he may have bought a car which is uneconomic to get to a reasonable standard. There are also some issues with the front suspension. I consider the garage may have sold the car in an unroadworthy condition - I believe this is an offence - what remedies are open to him (he has had the car for 17 days)?.

well I would advise you to take the car back to the garage, and explain to the garage all this and just make sure they know its an offence to sell the car in that state specially from a garage. Or they should atleast fix most of the problems for a discounted price.

First check - HPI. If this big-time stuffer is on their hit list - and that wasn't disclosed by the seller - take it back and demand a full refund - every penny. If he bought it as a re-built write-off; then it hasn't been repaired to a roadworthy standard; talk to Trading Standards at your local council for advice. Do not drive it.
An airbag deployment will deliberately fry it's ECU on these. There's a huge list of "post-deployment" checks and replacements to go through. This "bodge-it and leggit" outfit wouldn't have bothered. It would be interesting to know the extent of these "bodywork repairs" too....

If its deployed the airbag then the SRS ECU is skip fodder, It will need replacing.
Also if its deployed the airbag then BOTH front seatbelt pretensioners will have deployed too, they will need replacing as well as the SRS ECU to put the warning light out.
Check the seat belt buckles, they should be nice & floppy on there thick black cables at the edges of the seats, if they are low down with hardly any of the black sheathed mounting cable showing & also if the black sheathing has ripples / scrunched up then they have been fired & are now scrap.

Many thanks to all of you who have replied so informatively. I only have a limited amount of detail about the car because the new owner is actually my daughter's boyfriend and I don't wish to be seen as an over-protective and interfering parent. He is 19, this is his first car and I think he has become emotionally attached to having it. I don't think he appreciates how troublesome and expensive a bad (or badly repaired) car can be. My daughter has suggested to him that he takes it for an MOT (which it will fail, but will at least give him a list of the problems) rather than the inspection of the front suspension he has booked at a local garage - but I don't think he is likely to do this. I think the recommendation that an HPI check is done is very sensible, but I don't think I can suggest it unless I contact him after the garage has seen the car on Saturday (to ask what they told him) and suggest it then.
Thanks again for your help - I will post again to tell you how this turns out!

As LeePower has said, if they haven't changed the SRS ECU then this is most likely to be the problem. Once the SRS (system) has been triggered the ECU module also needs replacing.

Another thing, if its had action in a front end crash, any seatbelt that was being worn at the time should also be replaced, They only stretch the once!
