Hello there,
I have a problem with my 1982Talbot Motorhome. The engine a non-turbo 2.5 Diesel which according to the RAC man he believes it is from a fork lift truck (interesting). However although the engine runs fairly well it seems juddery and excessive vibration during acceleration mainly in 2nd, 4h and 5th. I have checked the filter
and I believe the engine mounts are o.k. due to fault started just before the MOT. If it was petrol engine I would have thought it may have been the spark plugs but I am no expert and the diesel engines do not work like petrol engines do they?. Any suggestions please.

Hi I would suspect the problem is caused by excessive 'diesel knock' caused by too much fuel being injected prior to ignition of the fuel. Either the pump timing is too advanced or the fuel injector blow off pressure is set too low.

Thanks Dieselhead for your reply. is it possible to adjust this myself please?

mike - It's possible to adjust the injection timing yourself although it's not usually required unless the position of the injection pump has been disturbed. Usually best left to a diesel specialist unless you have access to a dial gauge and timing data. You could mark the origonal position of the pump with a scriber and move it slightly to see if this makes any improvement but It's not really advisable if your not familiar with diesel engines.
Injectors are definitely a specialist job to check for leakage, correct spray pattern and blow off pressure. Last set I had done was £60 so it's not that expensive. I could feel the vibration and harshness of the engine through the accelerator pedal before I had them done so this could be your problem. First port of call is to check for a collapsed engine mount if you suspect it might not be the engine itself.
hope that helps

Thanks for your help dieselhead. It's running, I think I will leave it to the professionals. (-:
I will try the diesel purge first.

Hi Mike,
You said you thought engine mounts are OK, however a known weak point on these vans is the rear gearbox mount; the rubber spider shears allowing excess movement, though the symptons are excessive rocking of the engine during gear changes rather than vibration.
Still worth checking though (check for vertical movement by levering)

Try a good dose of Diesel Injector cleaner, the problem could be a misfire caused by dirty injectors. This is a cheap to try suggestion and will do no harm and it could even cure your problem altogether.

Thanks Spospe I have just bought some diesel purge from Ebay. Hopefully that will do the the trick.
One question the instructions advised I would have to remove return and fuel pipe and add to the can then run the engine at different speeds.
Could I add the contents of the mixture to the air inlet instead? The reason I ask I added a can of PowerBoost
(similar product) to my air inlet on my VW Passat. Did the job.

Thanks Steptoe I will check this. Recently the gearbox has been difficult to change in the third gear.
All gears are a little bit awkward due to the play in the gearbox. I am sure you know what I mean.

Hi Mike,
If your van is otherwise OK Delfin Designs (Google for website) sell a remanufactured gear linkage, costs about £350, but sometimes you can improve it considerably by tightening/replacing the bolt connecting the linkage to the gear selector rod. Also check bushes at base of gearlever for excessive play.
