Shares of Volkswagen extended gains on Thursday on talk that Porsche
could eventually mount a full takeover bid for Europe's biggest carmaker,
in which it is already the biggest shareholder.

I saw this and I think alot of water has to go under the bridge before this happens.
As you may be aware the VW workers, in Wolfsburg particularly, are afforded a great deal of protection not only by the German labour laws but also by the fact that the state of Lower Saxony owns a big portion of the company.
The EU are trying to challenge this and open VW up more to the commercial world and take overs in much the same way every other company is.
I think this and the fact that their cars are designed too expensively to manufacture are causing the efficiency problems and current high costs in the Company that the most recent managment team have been trying to turn round (with some success).
Writing this has got me thinking - would you buy a car from a Company that was part owned by your County Council knowing that they have a huge influence over it - which is effectively what is going on with VW ?
Clearly alot of people do but if it was my County Council the answer would be no.

Perhaps Lower Saxony's a bit more with it than, er, Rutland is it?
