rust - adam f
may sound a daft question but someone asked me and i didnt know the answer.

can rust be fixed? friends car has rust bubbles under the paint on his car. they are on the wheel arches and a bit on the side of the bonnet. he also has a bit on the corner of his roof which has now turned into a hole.

can a panel beater/sprayer type place / guy rectify these or is it a case of once the rust is there, its there forever?

I think the problem is that the rust "spiders" out, so an area can have rust where it isn't apparent. So unless you cut out quite a large area around the rust spot, and get it quickly enough, and do a very good job of protecting the bit that you fill/paint over/weld (without letting any moisture in), the rust will eventually return.

Once the rust is apparent you spend the rest of your time chasing it in practice.

Very interesting question - I have an old car with a fair amount of rust around the edges of doors and so on. It's not a classic and it will never be financially viable to replace the rusty parts - I could buy the same car again for less
However, I have thought of applying some of that chemical in a bottle stuff from Wilkinsons, £1 shops and the like, which claims to turn the rust to some sort of other 'compound' and stop it getting worse

Does anyone know if this stuff works?
Is there any point?
Or is it just whiling one's life away aimlessly?

It changes the rust(ferrous oxide)into triferric tetroxide.which is water soluble but the rust will come back.

Ahhhhh - when you say it's water soluble - what does that mean for the ugly old rust?
Does it dissolve in rain? and fall off?

You can tell I'm no scientist

You're supposed to paint it immediately but the rust will come back-the water-soluble bit works if you put it on chrome plating but you need to get oil or wax on it immediately after wiping it off.
