I don't know if here or technical is the best place to discuss as it's not a problem as such (yet)
I put some Millers Diesel Power Plus in the car, filled it up and as it was hot, floored it in third.
It got to about 4000rpm then all the power disappeared, like hitting the limiter. This wasn't the limiter as the car felt totally flat afterwards. Driveable, certainly, but way down on power. No dash board lights activated.
Driving home earlier, it was fine.
The mpg calculations from the computer were screwy the whole time.
Before 'problem' - 50ish average
After 'problem' 40mpg
On the way home - 44mpg and seems to be rising again.
What the hell happened?!

Can't help, other than to say I think that the problem is a coincidence and not related to the addition of Millers. I have used it for many years, not religiously every fill up, but I did give my car a triple dose when I accidentally put about 5 litres of petrol in before adding about 34 of diesel (Phew) and perhaps it does nothing but I think it does not do harm, in my experience.

Sounds like you have blown the turbo in some way.
|
That's certainly what I thought until it fixed itself after being switched off!
I use Millers quite a lot, so hadn't thought of 'blaming' it, don't worry!

Faulty air mass sensor. Not uncommon on these.....

sounds like it could be a poss turbo fault. if the vehicle looses power when under load at between 3 to 4000 rpm but is ok after the ignition is turned off n on, then the variable vain arm on the turbo maybe starting to stick. make sure all your basics are ok tho like air mass and all the vacuum pipes from N75 turbo control valve. what car is it?

I have experienced exactly the same symptoms in my golf tdi. put your foot down and suddenly there is a power fade/loss which results in a loss of all power until you stop and re-start the car.
The VAG specialists diagnosed a turbo vane problem where on turbo boot all the power is suddenly let out through the waste gate. i have been told tha I have not driven the car hrad enough through all the rev range and that this has caused the problem. are the symptoms i have explained similar to yours? i can maybe share my thoughts on your problem . Has anyone else had the same problem?

Thanks for that. Yes that seems to be the case - it's only happened the once.
I researched before I bought the car and read that it's important to rev it to keep everything in the turbo 'freed up'.
I normally change gear at 2500 - 3000rpm - sometimes I'll take it out and deliberately rev the nuts off of it in the higher gears but it just feels wrong!
Jonah - it was past 4000rpm, but nowhere near the limiter. It's a SEAT Toledo (Think VW Passat)

This link gives a to a trouble shooting page:tdiclub.com/TDIFAQ/TDiFAQ-8.html#e There is a waste gate on pre-PD engines, but not on the VNT equipped engines. Could be something very simple like the actuator arm for the VNT, or a fuel filter, but see the page.

It is good to speak to someone who is having the same problem as I am having with my tdi diesel.
I look after the car not driving it too hard and drive it similarly to yourself changing gears at 2500 rpm to "look after the engine (my last three cars are kept for sometime usually 120000+ miles)" The problem occurs when you need that extra bit of umff and it just dies and appears to revert back to limp home mode.
Can the actuater be freed in someway??
The car was bought to be able to get me out of trouble if I needed it to avoid acrash situation etc but now i am disappointed because it may just revert to limp home mode.

I'm getting exactly this problem with my Golf Mk 4 tdi 130 PD - it's at the menders ( VW main dealer) who can find no fault stored but are renewing the Air Mass Meter to see if that sorts it - I'll let you know...
|
This concerns me slightly as I have the PD130 engine in the Ibiza, and on the 6-mile commute to work it barely needs revving above 2000rpm to make swift progress. And in this weather the engine isn't warmed up for most of the journey so I'm not happy revving it for the sake of it.
|
47rugby - driving at 2500 revs is not looking after the engine. It needs reving through the rev range regularly to keep it in good condition. It is unlikely to pass the emisions and smoke test at MOT otherwise.

theres two pivot points on the vane arm, if you can try to get a drop of oil onto them. this should help
