vw or toyota? - gasspringmaker
i have been looking at a vw transporter minibus and a toyota of the same.
can anyone shed some light into which one is the best/most reliable of the two.
many thanks.

Hi,
I have an 02 VW Caravelle and a Toyota Yaris. Whilst I really like the VW (and it is far more reliable than the Merc V-Class we used to have) there have been quite a few faults.
weve had problems with the Alternator, central locking, steering vibration, Crached pedal box and poor gear change.
I suspect the Toyota will be more reliable. My wife didn't like the Toyota van we tried as it felt too light on the road.

Can't comment on these specific vehicles but having owned both makes I can say that you will get far better support and quality from Toyota dealers. From my experience.

I'd buy both and then you can always use the Toyota when the VW is being repaired!!

Just remembered a mate has a Toyota import; Lucida?, that is now 12 years old. Hasn't put a foot wrong and owes him nothing. Went to a specialist importer in Bristol I think. And it has real good quality curtains as standard!

I knew this post would likely bring out the VaG bashers !

Hardly, as I am an owner of a VW Golf and have nothing but praise for the model - the dealers, well that's another story as I'll find out next week when mine goes in for its 1st variable service!

However, I knew my repost would elicit that response.

Please let us know the full details of your 1st service and what the dealer was like.

its a catch 22 situation you speak to one person, they say vw then another says toyota.
but we preferred the toyota hiace for comfort over the vw ,but are they reliable and do they rust?

I don't think there really are any true rotboxes any more.

You'll get at the very least 10 years out of a VW or Toyota before they start to corrode.

As for reliability, despite what some will say, I doubt you'll get any serious aggro out of either to be honest, so whatever floats your boat. VWs tend to be overpriced.

But not as Seats or Skodas.

659.

But he wants a minibus.

Proview - try both and if you like both to drive, and thre price is right, then go for a Toyota as you're more likely to get a good dealer who will look after you properly.

If you want a dashboard that rattles - go for the Toyota

In reply to lakelad,

Very good point and one I can vouch for - even with a relatively new one (53 plate).

As for oldgits point about first services - I hate them regardless of the car and IMO a complete rip off. I appreciate they are able to look for stuff because as dealers they know what to look for but whenever I pay the bill and look at it afterwards I always think - that is alot of money for very little work/bits.

I would go for the Toyota myself - they may rattle but will no doubt prove to be more relaible overall.

I can't abide rattles of any type and so a rattly Toyota would be a complete no-go for me, however even my Golf has a slight dasboard/fascia ratttle that I've cured myself after much backache and time - rather than let the main dealer get their greasy hands on it and probably make it worse.
vw or toyota? - jase1
Are Toyotas really rattly?

I must admit I haven't been in any older Toyotas in quite a while, but if they do rattle this is totally unacceptable -- my Hyundai is rattle-free at 5 years old, and if a cheap company can make cars that don't rattle, so can Toyota.

I'm with oldgit when it comes to rattly cars and SWMBO's 53 plate Corolla is plagued by rattles.
The car must have doubled in weight (slight exageration but you get the jist) with the amount of fibre/foam padding they have put in and it still has not cured it. Trouble is I keep finding bits of it so it's obviously falling out.

In response to jase - there have been a number of posters in here that have cited rattly Toyota's and I know HJ raised this as an issue on his long term Avensis test.
Also look at the CBCB on some Lexus model and customers appear to have raised concerns of rattles also.
