I have just replaced the head gasket on a 1.4SE Astra (1995). I have got a wire left over from the loom that needs connecting to the engine somewhere. It comes out of the alternator wiring loom about half way along and it coloured blue with a green tracer. It has a one way connector on it with a green water resistant boot on it.
Where did I disconnect it from??!!

Was it connected in the first place though? It *may* well be for a higher spec model that has something extra that your particular model doesn't have.
From my days of tinkering with Cavalier's, a blue wire went to the temperature sensor. can't remember if it had a green tracer on the wire though.
Have you tried putting a multimeter on the end of the wire to see what kind of output is coming out?

Have you checked the wire to the oil pressure switch?

Thank you sir.
I didn't disconnect it, it must have come out when the alternator fell from where I had balanced it. Very dark and oily there, didn't spot it.
Shame though, I was hoping that it was going to cure this new hunting that it seems to have picked up but thank you all the same.

I will second DD's suggestion of the wire to the temperature sender in the top of the head. Is your temperature gauge registering anything? From memory, end of sensor probably looks like a large flat headed clout nail you slide connector onto.

check all air pipes are secure if its hunting.
