One of the piston heads in my 306 is damaged and pitted. Is it ok to put a head back onto this? Or am going have to go in for the long haul and overhaul?
Many Thanks

It depends what you mean by damaged

Looks like the surface of the moon.

If its as bad you say it is and you are going to keep the car then I would change it while you have it partially stripped down and while your at it change the rings and shell bearings..
|
and if I just want to get it back up and running?
Will it impair the cars performance and cause futher problems or is likely to just have a carbon build up on that particular piston. All else seems in order. To give you the full extent of what happened. The injection inlet port fell into the cylinder!!! How!! and was rattling around in there for a few miles (prob bout 15miles), the head is obviously shot as it is missing in injection port but the cylinder is undamaged but the piston head didnt fair so well and now looks like the moon as said.
So is it possible to put a head back onto this?

No. Pull out the affected piston and examine very carefully. Generally, if there has been a foreign body in a diesel combustion chamber, hammering on the piston head will cause the top ring to stick in its groove - or worse.

as said it really cant have done the big and little bearings any good at all.
You really do want to drop the sump and pull this piston out if you intend on keeping the car........
Other than that its really up to yourself what you think best????????

You will want to check the bore for any scoring aswell. This is railway experience but when ever we get a dropped valve we always change the piston and liner and believe me if they could get away with it they would but do it for piece of mind. Like oldman and 659FBE said if you intend to keep the car for a little inconvience and piece of mind change the piston.

if it is an old high mileage engine with no other signs of damage put the piston to tdc and take of any bits to smooth it best you can and put the head back on. if you strip it down the cost will mount up and before you realise you would have been better of swopping the engine with one from a breaker ,it is surprising what you can get away with when needs must.
if however it is a good low mileage car further investigation should be done or you might be as well with the engine swap rather than just buying a cylinder head
