hi john i have had a 03 plate hdi for 13 mths its done 37500m al servicing done by main dealer, i have now developed a starting fault, after about a minute it would start but today it would not start for a lot longer, i have dropped it in to local dealer for a plug in to the computer at £65.00 need i be dreding the outcome

sounds like heater plugs (if yr lucky) sahop around for best prices-easy to replace, just need tiny spanners 7 or 8mm .hope thats the fault and nothing more serious.
|
thanks mate let you know how it goes tomorrow with dealer, fingers crossed.

As far as I am aware these engines don't rely on their heater plugs to start when the ambient temperature is this warm.
Obviously I'm stabbing in the dark, but air leak into the fuel system would be more likely, I would have thought.

That's why I bought a car with the VW PD engine. The old IDI PSA diesels were bombproof (almost), but the HDi is a financial timebomb.

I totally agree, I used to have Peugeots with the XUD engine, all kept until they had done well over 100k miles and they never went wrong. I now have a Hdi with under 100k, the low pressure pump was replaced under warrenty, the high pressure one is now leaking. I have been quoted £900 to replace it and ithe car also jumps out of 2nd gear. So trade in time for a VAG group car with PD engine, I am sure they have their own faults but hopefully not as many nor as expensive as the Hdi ones.

There are some outstanding bargains to be had if you can find a car with the PD engine of your choice, but without the VW or Audi bonnet badge. The VW content of my "clone" seems to be about 99.5% - so no problems getting cheap spares from other sources.
If you go for a PD engine, check that you can live with the long term maintenance requirements of the Euro cat IV variants. I believe the particulate filters on some of these have not been trouble free. My choice was the cat III engine - 130 PS (engine code AWX). Look after the timing drive on these engines.
