Help again.

Having decided that the Yaris would be a suitable replacement for my RAV (and thanks to all previous respones on my purchasing dilemma) I now find the car is too low to the ground to safely navigate my steep and weirdly shaped drive. I have a two-day test vehicle and have managed to get it stuck on drive this morning (drive is steep then flattens out rather quickly). Has anyone any suggestions for a car which would sit higher off the ground - again must be:

small
cute
reliable
economical

OR - any way to elevate the YARIS - would fitting larger tyres do the trick or would this compromise the ride, economy, speedo (have looked through some previous posts)?

Thanks in advance for all help. I just want to order the car and be done with it! My family really are no help as they have no intertest in cars and are about to commit murder if I don't decide soon!

Id try a few other cars. Messing with a new car by changing specs is best avoided.

If no other small cars will do, id start looking at crossover vehicles with a little extra ground clearance.

Or you could see how much it would cost to alter your driveway, esp if you like the Yaris - get a discount and use that to alter drive!

I'd agree that it's time to re-engineer the drive - it must be pain if people visit, for example. Alternatively it's back to soft-roaders like the RAV4, Freelander, Honda CRV and so on.

Sorry Leonora - I didn't see this new thread when I responded on the other one - my reponse will have seemed singularly unhelpful!

Whoever designed your drive has something to answer for! I agree that you may be stuck with a 4 x 4 unless you get a landscape gardener in (could be worth it if you end up with a cheaper car than another 4 x 4).

You'd simply have to try various cars to see if they get stuck - difficult on a test drive! Looking at my daughter's Yaris and SWMBO's Mini, I don't think there's much difference in ground clearance. 17" wheels might just make a difference, but would 2 inches be enough?

Another RAV 4 is about £10,000 more than a Yaris. If your budget runs to the former, some landscaping for less than £10k might be worth it.

17" wheels fitted should still have the same rolling radius as the smaller wheels so the car will not be any higher off the ground?

If increasing ride height via the tyres then it will have knock on effects on suspension, speedo, comfort, handling, insurance etc.

Sounds more like a driveway problem imo.

yep sell up and move, there used to be a house near me with a drive so steep you could here the gimbals rattling every morning when the car was started ,but he was a doctor and these things never seem to phase them...........

What about a Fiat Panda, the standard one might be high enough or the 4x4 version. There is also the Fiat Sedici or the Suzuki vareant but it might be too big but is also 4WD.

I have driven my two day test YARIS down the motorway today to see relatives and I must say it has been a pleasant drive; comfortable, nippy and I love the keyless entry and start system. However, could not get the hang of the automatic air conditioning. I thought this meant that you set a temperature which was then automatically maintained; however, when it was turned to auto the thing went mad and changed all the settings, moving to recirculated air, blowing super freezing air in our faces (when it had been set to face and feet) and generally exhibiting a complete mind of its own.

But of course this is all academic owing to the low front so I have decided to follow the general consensus of opinion and sort out the drive before going any further. The RAV is safe for the moment...

Incidentally, I found that some car manufacturers seem to supply height from the ground in the technical specs (which is brilliant from my point of view) but not all. Shame. Would have saved a lot of unnecessary messing about.

Incidentally, school boy, I quite like the look of the panda but am always very wary of french and Ialian cars.

Is there a latest Suzuki Ignis then if it must be japanese? Not sure if it would have the same drive as a Yaris, but certainly a bit higher off the ground!

Dodge Calibre? Probably not much more than a Yaris.....

Height from the ground is only half the story, it needs to have a short wheel base too.

I have exactly the same problem, my garage is two levels below ground and it rises to the surface in the space of a few incredibly steep metres then levels off. The underside of my car catches every time and it makes my eyes water. It doesn't happen to short cars.

I try and minimise the damage by approaching at an angle so the front right wheel drops down the ramp first leaving the left rear wheel to start to lift up so it kind of see saws over the other two wheels but doesn't bottom out. I can't explain it better than that but it seems to work.

Designed, particularly by an Architect = hell usually.

The guys that put it in, i.e. the slope etc. (may) have worked to approved drawings, but in the construction industry just don't presume anything.
