Peugeot & Citroen cooling fan motors - nick62
I would like to know if the two different manuafacturers of radiator cooling fan motors for the Peugeot/Citroen range are interchangeable? I am talking about a 1999 306 1.6 petrol, but there seems to be lots of PSA models covered by these parts.

The two types are either GATE or ECIA. Even the main dealer asked which type were fitted to my car (some help the chassis number is to them!)

Does anyone have "chapter & verse" on this issue? Are the drive shaft diameters the same (so I don't end up having to buy a new fan blade also)?

I have seen phoographs of both types and the fixing pitch circle and connectors look to be identical, but I dont want to end up with a brand new part that won't fit, and I need both the engine cooling and aircon. ones, so twice the trouble if they are wrong.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

We use a universal motor and fan (gate) that fits the majority of these variants ,supplied by Germansweedish&french at considerably less cost than main dealer. The beauty of these is that the fan is held to the motor shaft by a circlip rather than the l/h thread screw that can never be undone.

The fans on mine are held on with a circlip and the fan drive is via a dowel/pin through the shaft behind the fan itself (the shaft is plain, no threads). Does this give any clues as to if these will fit?

Could you give me the reference number at GSF. May be in the market for one soon, judging by bearing noise. Specialist scrappy doesn't hold many 405 bits now

I will try to check out the part # tomorrow & report back.

Like many manufacturers Citroen buy in the fan/motor/cowling assemblies from multiple suppliers. There are cost benefits to them by doing this I suspect. The problem for later repairers is that individual components are not interchangeable between the two suppliers. In the case of the cooling fan assembly the manufacturers name is moulded into the plastic fan cowling and is usually visible without removal. From memory the GATE logo is just the name while the ECIA version is the four letters compressed into a single block. The method of securing the fan blade to the motor shaft is usually one of the differences so you will need the correct type.

Got the job sorted-out.

Brought two BRAND NEW Citroen Xantia "Gate" fan motors (c/w fans) from different eBay autions for less than £50 for the pair delivered, (slightly different part numbers), but looked to be a good match on the photographs!

One was a straight fit and the other had too large a diameter fan blade, so I modifed one of the old fan blades (drilled-out the shaft mounting hole to 8mm and turned a small amount of plastic off the back edge of the inner boss to clear the connector moulding on the motor. The connector and three fixing points were identical to my existing ECIA set-up. TheGate motors look to be a lot more substantial than the original ECIA ones too.

Job done.

i know this is an old post but im hoping people who wrote here before can help me.

I have the same problem of having to replace both fan motors on my 306 hdi 2001 with a/c

I cant seem to find any ECIA motors in good enough condition to replace mine. However i have found plenty of GATE fans.

Will the GATE fans fit straight onto my cowling with the electric plug etc? If so what sort of cars do i need to be looking at to get the right fitting.

cheers
