I have a 2003 renault kangoo van 1.5dci, recently I have found it difficult to start when the engine is warm it turns over but will not start it takes 4 or 5 attempts to get it to go. It never happens when the engine is cold and id like to have an idea of what it might be so i dont get shafted at the garage. Any suggestions?

Normally caused by fuel starvation it could be vapourisation ,have you lost a heat shield or has a fuel pipe moved .

Thanks for your reply andy, ive only had the van 2 weeks hopefully whatever it is will be covered by the warranty. i need the van for work and dont really want it stuck at the garage, i dont know much about mechanics how do i check for the things u mentioned!

Does the little round light on the dash flash when when you try to start it? If so then its a dodgy immobiliser, two of our Kangoos do this. Not mended them, just learned to live with them.

just been out and tried it, it started first time as usual but on the second attempt wouldnt go. the little round light went straight out though.

While it could be many things; when faced with a temperature-related starting problem on any Renault the words "crankshaft sensor" always come to mind. They never leave codes, but are quite cheap; so always worth a first look.
If you've the capability; comparing the leakback rate from each injector is always worthwhile too. These diesel systems can suffer badly if they've ever been mis-fuelled and can struggle to reach the minimum [injector activation threshold] pressure when hot-cranking if the secondary pump is going.

thanks for your reply screwloose, its not something i can do my self but will put forward your suggestions at the garage

Hi me again,
ive got the van booked into a garage tommorow, the guy on the phone said he could do a diagnostic test to see if there was a fault stored, even though the engine management light has never come on. is this possible?
|
Yes; although the MIL light has neven been on, it's still possible that there's some codes stored. It's best to print or record them, then wipe the memory and see if any recur. If they don't, they could have been there for a long time, so don't get fixated on obscure, unrelated faults. Bear in mind that crank sensors don't leave codes unless they're completely shot.

update
I got the van back yesterday and it is still not starting first time when its warm. The garage have changed the crankshaft sensor, camshaft sensor and replaced the glow plugs! any suggestions before I take it back?
