What are BR's current recommendations for affordable SatNav for use in the UK? Is it worth going for more than the basic model in each case?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Start by looking at Tom Tom one. UK map only, as standard but Euro map card available for about £85. It has a new processing chip that is faster to lock on and works with weaker signals than previous designs. Does full UK post code.
The Tom Tom 510 is an update of the 500 and costs more than the ONE and only does main roads of Europe, as standard, and not sure yet if the processing is as good as is in the ONE. Might be but you need to ask.

Thanks, BB. Will do. In the meantime, any recommendations for Navman, Sony etc.? Anyone able to compare products?

Do you own a PDA (Windows CE etc)? If so, then you can get a kit to run TomTom on it for very little money. I use a HP iPaq with TT5 and it works very well indeed.
I paid about £150 for the kit and software, and I think you can get better deals online now, but of course you need to already own the £200 PDA.

"Medion PNA at Aldi if any left"
Seconded - bought one when TVM mentioned them about a month ago - excellent, easy to use and seems up to date mapping wise. Only disadvantage is that Europe is only "major roads" but for UK I can't fault it for the price. As for trailing wires - only one to ciggy lighter and different mounting options, one of which is just an adhesive pad (along with a couple of cases) supplied in the box. Great value (and the voice guidance is a very posh young lady who always says "please"!!!)

I too want nav in my car but don't want suckers and trailing wires so I'm going to get a nokia N70, and a bluetoon reciever (Holox do a good one the B321 with a long battery life and decent signal) I've got Tom Tom on a memory stick and I'm going to mount it in a nokia car kit.
Downside- the phone is quite large, smallish screen but you have voice guidance and I guess you shouldn't be looking away from the road anyway also the receiver will need recharging but as said not too often
Upside- no wires, no suckers, less to carry around when you park, less risk of theft, phone and nav in one, carry round and use on foot
Job done. Or it will be when it stops being so hot!

I have a TomTom 510-fab piece of kit. As fast if not faster than the TomTom One, plus better screen and bluetooth connection for your mobile.

Oh and the TT 510 should give around 6 hours of use, whereas the TT One only gives about 2 hours. May mean the difference between having to charge the battery (and associated leads)or not during a journey!
