Fun 2nd car for £3k - Miko
Hi, I am after a 2nd car for light use (approx 4000 mile per year) with about £3000 to spend. I'd like something different and it doesn't need to be too practical, although it needs to be reliable. I was thinking about an Alfa GTV, or perhaps even a Porsche 944. Are either cars reliable for everyday driving? would I be making a big mistake? anyone have any suggestions? Sanity check required and appreciated.... thankyou.

I'm afraid old Alfa GTV's can be a money pit unless you are very lucky

MX5?
Fun 2nd car for £3k - mjm
Yes, MX5 seconded. As much fun as you want, plus good design/build quality plus easy servicing etc.
Fun 2nd car for £3k - Miko
I considered the MX5 but don't want a convertable, more a Coupe type thing.

Reliable? £3000? Hmmm. What an optimist.

Puma? Celica?
Fun 2nd car for £3k - Miko
Hard top... Hmmm hadn't thought of that....

"Reliable? £3000?" indeed I agree that this is a contradiction in terms. Lets say "fairly reliable".

Buy the Eunos and bag the change.

At this price level, if reliability is a priority it surely has to be Japanese.

Toyota Celica or MR2 should give you plenty of choice.

Old Italian cars tend to be very unreliable. Owners call this 'character'

Get an MX5 and leave the roof up.

Seriously if its PURE fun you want the MX5 is the most fun for £3000 and it wont ever break either.

Toyota Supra.

Everyone goes for the auto with leather but for a fun car go for the manual with cloth and you'll get top value.

You do not necessarily have to be 'very lucky' with the Alfa GTV, but you do need to be sensible about what example you buy. If it's been properly looked after and maintained, it'll be as reliable as anything else.
Another possibility, which falls into the same category, is a Fiat Coupe.

Fiat Barchetta with a hard top?
Faster than an MX5 mk1/Eunos, cheaper, more exclusive.
Plus mine has been reliable.

This screamed out MX5 at me before reading the replies. I would recommend a Puma 1.7, family member has owned one for 5 years going on 6, other than a failed wheel bearing and routine servicing has cost nothing to run. It's had some money spent on it's brakes recently, oh and a new pair of front tyres. I uses no oil and has a fine engine. Handling is superb as is the superb gearchange that belies the fact that its a f.w.d.

How about a nice 205 1.9 GTi for about a grand and pocket the rest?

I'd go with TVM and the Capri..

Way way overpriced though.

I agree with TU - Honda CRX with hard top. You can take the roof off if you want, or leave it on as a coupe. Mine cost £2.5K and it's been great - just avoid main dealers for servicing.

I saw a suprisingly clean Peugeot 406 3.0V6 SE coupe 98 (S) for £2,850 recently with 2 owners and 84k on the clock, if your annual mileage is as low as you say this could fit your requirements... Just a thought.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned a 200SX.

Honda Prelude fifth generation 2.2 about 97, manual or auto with 'tiptronic'. I've just come back from another days-long drive with mine - just can't resist driving it and can't stop smiling. Other Prelude drivers smile at you too!
I was going to spend 20k on a 156 Sportwagon...
Fun 2nd car for £3k - Ian G
I was stuck between 200sx and MR2 turbo for a fun second car - but my budget was £4k.

In the end I went for the MR2 turbo (245bhp), as I didn't need the 4 seats of the 200sx, and it was by far the better looking car.

You'll find a decent normally aspirated MR2 for £3k (158bhp or 173bhp), and it will be as reliable as any Toyota if cared for resonably. Cheap turbos will be a bit ropey at this price though I reckon.

I find the RWD offers something extra to the usual fwd coupes like Celica, Puma, Fiat etc in the same price range.

If you do look into them, don't go for a T-bar though - good idea for maybe 10 days of the year, but is leaky and noisy for the other 355.

Took a relative's Puma out this morning, It is a seriously fine little motor, won't let go grip, a thundering engine (once I blew out the cobwebs) and super, super gearchange. Buy one it doesn't drive like a fwd at all.
