I am about to replace my trusty 1996 almera for a new one and am hoping to sell it on.The problem is the tax classification is "disabled" so I will have to remove the present tax disc from the car if i sell it.
What is the best way to go about this? If i change the classification before i sell it I will have to tax it.Can i sell it without tax?
Any help will be appreciated.

I think you just sell it as it is, but point out to the buyer that he will have to change the taxation class.
I bought a LandRover a number of years ago that was taxed as an Agricultural Vehicle. I simply changed the classification (and paid the higher rate of duty).

Can you change the tax class and SORN it immediately? You can sell it untaxed, but the new owner needs to tax it before collection to drive it legally on the highway.
Since a prospective buyer will want to test drive it I'd suggest you leave it taxed until a buyer leaves deposit on it.

My wife's last car was classed as disabled (it was ex Motability, with no mods) and the dealer had to go to the county vehicle tax office in Oxford to re-class and re-tax it - it's not something that can be done at a PO.

Ditto with my father in law's car when mother in law passed. Had to go to DVLA local office to change the class.

Wht not phone the DVLA and ask??

I bought an espace with disabled tax. Just tell the buyer to take the V5 to the local dvla office and he will have to change the classification in person, and buy new road tax. This is the only way he will be able to register it in his name. Until he does this he can drive on the existing disabled tax. Same thing with my ex plod 530d.

The answers above are correct and anybody that has had to stand in the dvla office for hours (like i sometimes have to for things like this) will be put off by the no tax in car and will probably buy someone elses.
Most cars sell better with tax so just put your price up by £100 and deal, OP.

sorry just re-read this...........and its wrong, you cannot drive a car with disabled tax that you have just purchased, the owner of the tax disc has to return it to dvla by law and there is a fine attached if they dont.

Whatever you do, don't SORN it still classed as Disabled. If you do that you enter a limbo land. I did that once, and then tried to re-tax it as PLG. You cannot change the taxation category of an untaxed vehicle, you cannot retax a vehicle as Disabled if you are no longer entitled. So you cannot do anything.
In the end I gave up and sold it to let someone else sort it out.

It DOES take ages. I had to stand in Chester DVLA office for ages in March because my girlfriend's new car was in Disabled not PLG class. But, relatively simple. Just annoying!
