Had my Scenic in for the seatbelt recall today and asked them to put new blades on the front. Now I know its my own fault for not confirming the price but when it had been in a couple of months ago, I had asked then and was told they were "30 odd quid".
Well, SWMBO went and collected the car tonight to be hit with a cost of £44.56 each, plus VAT, plus £15.60 labour!
A total of £107.34! For two blinking wiper blades!!!
Now I know as I said its my fault for not confirming the price beforehand, but has anyone else replaced these wipers and if so, how much were they?
(Incidentally I had went to Halfords and couldn't find wipers for my car and didn't really like the look of the fittings on them for changing them!)

The Scenics wipers are set for LHD too. Thoroughly irritating as the RH ones in front of driver in RHD cars seem to lose contact with screen the faster you get in ones i've driven.
|
Rediculous, it would be cheaper to hire a Scenic for the weekend and swap them over!
|
|
I hate to think how much the ones in the Ran will be - they are huge and different sizes. They are clap hands style and ,iss each other by a mm or two at most. Frightening

Cheaper to take a day trip across the channel, go to supermarket and get Bosch or Valeo for a fiver each and spend the remainder on about 50 bottles of decent swiggable wine!

Do you think, maybe, this is all just a phase?
Perhaps one day we will look back and say 'I remember in the early 2000s main dealers (remember them? You had to go to them if they had the particular make you wanted because no-one else was allowed to sell it) were desperate to make money and did things like charge 100 quid for a pair of wiper blades and always told owners their brake discs were clapped out at 12k miles, ha ha ha'.
|
Surely trading standards should get involved.
Ok you gave them permission to change blades before hand, but there?s always a fair price, and a rip off price.
i.e. if someone does your drive for 6k, but all other quotes are only 1k to 1.5k, then clearly this is a rip off.
£100 for wipers is utterly ridiculous; the dealer should be ashamed (like they?ll care)
im sure the local paper would be interested, they always are in such scenarios, unless of course this dealer has a large ad on the front page
|
btw don?t GSF stock OEM wiper blades, cant imagine they?ll be more than £10 each.
£15.60 for labour, did they hire a plumber to fit them!
|
They have tried it on with Mrs G, I would go in there myself and have a rant on the basis that these prices cannot be right and if they are they should have phoned and advised as to the cost etc.
£15.60 is probably the min labour charge on their system, perhaps 15mins when the job took all of 5.
My wife went into our local Renault dealer for a new rear wiper for our Clio, she went to the parts dept to buy one for me to fit, the guy was insistent that they should fit it for her at no extra cost, job done under a tenner.
|
.....they should have phoned and advised as to the cost etc.
And who would you expect to pay for the labour time, call charge and overheads for making the call?

"Hello Mr G it is XXX at XXXX garage here, just to advise you as to the cost of the wiper blades, they are not cheap items these days I am afraid sir, and would you rather fit them your self sir?"
What does it take? Customer Service.

It costs money which someone has to pay for ~ presumably the customer ~ and this thread is all about how much the customer is charged. You can't have it all ways.

£15.60 could be less than 15 minutes labour, and that would have to include getting the blades from the stores, disposing of the packaging and the old blades etc etc etc. Service technicians aren't like surgeons who are waited on hand and foot and just stand there and say "Scalpel please".

Perhaps the demand for Scenic blades isn't high enough yet to make it sufficiently profitable for pattern part manufacturers to copy them. The overheads ~ tooling etc ~ for such things is probably quite expensive.

You may be surprised. My Audi A2 wiper was £14 - had to be main dealer part as no other company produced them.

Doesn't anyone consider things like this before buying a car?

One might consider whether brand X is generally cheaper to service than brand Y or that brand Z has a reputation for expensive parts though I dont beleive anyone would go in to a part by part cost comparison.

I accept what you say, but you only need to look at Scenic wipers to know they're going to be expensive to replace. That being the case why complain when replacement time comes round?

Oh right ....... we'd better not buy that car cos the wiper blades look too expensive to replace.
Get real ! They're only wiper blades for goodness sake. Personally I'd go ballistic if they tried that one with me .... over £100 for two wiper blades .... no chance !
I'm ex-motor trade so I do have a reasonable idea of what parts CAN but should cost.
|
>£100?!
Time for some locking wiper blade nuts....if they really are going to be that pricey, they'll start to walk from car parks.

If someone else was to say what the charge for replacement wiper blades was at their Renault dealer then perhaps we could put this thread into perspective. Anyone else got a Scenic II or does business with a Renault dealer?

IIRC my Renault dealer charged £40 fitted for two new wipers. So are they much different on the Scenic?
|

By my reckoning £44.56 each, plus VAT, plus £15.60 labour comes to £120.32 if the £15.60 labour includes VAT, or £123.31 if it doesn't. So it looks as if they made a mistake and undercharged you. ;-)

Perhaps the labour was plus vat and the wipers inc vat, that kinda works out.
|
SWMBO tells me that the garage gave her a 15% discount on the bill as we had one of their "loyalty" cards which may account for the differences. The card won't be getting used again thats for sure.
I emailed Renault and the dealer last night, Renault have got back with the usual apologies etc and they have asked the dealer to reply to both of us.
Interestingly, Renault never said whether these prices were accurate or not!

I would think it's up to the individual dealer to set their prices.

Looks like it's £23.50 vat postage for a pair from gsf (www.gsfcarparts.com/ )
They're described as 'scenic 2 03>', which I assume means scenic 2 from 2003 onwards.
|
Phoned two dealers today and they both quoted me £58 for the pair of wipers. Have emailed the dealer and Renault and Renault have acknowledged the email and they have also passed to dealer for their comments.
No contact from the dealer yet but no surprise there!
|
Just as a little follow up, after emailing Renault over the course of a few days, the dealer has phoned me back today to apologise and say they got it wrong!
Apparently it was a Trainee (?) in the parts dept that day and he used the code for a pair of wipers instead of the individual ones, and so I was charged for 2 pairs instead of one pair.
Yeah I believe it - NOT!
Anyway, I am getting a refund for the difference. Still won't be going back to the dealer.
