Windscreen disc clutter - the Law ? - hillman
I have very great respect for the BRs who regularly advise on traffic law. I was once told to remove discs from my windscreen to get the car through the MOT. The tester said that only certain discs could be displayed. Can anyone refer me to the clause ? My employer wants me to put the company permit on the windscreen, and I want to put it on the rear sidescreen where it won't restrict vision.

Up in the middle behind the rearview mirror. If anyone tells you to take it off urge them very politely to go forth and multiply energetically.

Good idea Lud. I used to do that with my CSMA stickers - it filled in the gap in the sun visors nicely.

I used to put my tax disc there to reduce screen clutter. One day some fool told me the disc had to be down on the left like everyone else's. I paid no attention.

However these days one has to have (in this town) council bumf on the windscreen too. So now I have a couple of things over on the left.

Tax disc (with advertising extra bit). Resident's parking permit. Resident's (or rather, worker's) parking permit for work. Resident's permit for second home in country/pad in town. Swiss motorway sticker (can't be removed).

Can't see out any more.

That's just the start. Raise you a Dartford Crossing toll tag, the speed camera detector, the speed camera detector's laser detector, the speed camera's GPS aerial, and an air freshener dangling tastefully from the rear view mirror.

Fortunately my sat-nav is integrated, otherwise I would have an aftermarket jobbie obscurring my vision too.

Worry beads? St Christopher medal? Statue of some religious icon with LED eyes glued to the top of the facia?

"When and where should I display the licence?
A licence comes into force on the day it is issued. But, if you apply for a licence in advance, it comes into force on the first day of the following month and you should not display it on your vehicle until then. You must display the disc on the near side (passenger side) of your vehicle?s windscreen. If the vehicle does not have a windscreen, the disc should be displayed on the near side of the vehicle."

As far as the MOT goes, only the screen area swept by the wiper blades is testable.
The tax disc should oficially go bottom left.

The tax disc should oficially go bottom left.

I have always understood this to be the case.
IIRC something to do with, provided the vehicle is parked on the left, any "official" can read the details from the pavement.

I suspect lorries were a little smaller when that rule was created.

The police will look at it from a point of view of visibility if you have numerous items attached to the windscreen; if visibility is considered hampered then they will take the appropriate action.

There's an old saying that a fly on your glasses can block the view of a cathedral.

The tax disk has always been required to be displayed in the lower left hand side of the windscreen.

Other than the position of the Excise Licence the law is not specific as to what has not to be displayed on the front windscreen (ignoring the glass marks etc.)

But there is a catch all in The Motor Vehicle (Construction and Use) Regulations 1984 at Reg 30(3):

ALL glass and other transparent material fitted to a motor vehicle shall bve maintained in such condition that it does not obscure the visiion of the driver while the vehicle is being driven on a road.

So essentially, depending on circumstances you could argue at a prosecution that the VED would be causing an obstruction in its prescribed place, so your putting it above the mirror should be allowed.

or not?

The key wording in the earlier response was: " Other than the position of the Excise Licence the law is not specific.."

I often wonder how people get away with those fluffy dice, toys etc suspended from the rear view mirror.

They must seriously affect visibility, the more so the nearer you are seated to the screen.

Do not forget the bare CD suspended there to reflect those laser beams.

Fluffy dice and CD Discs are not attached to the glass are they?

Take me in a Min back seat I would block out any vision to the rear through the drivers internal mirror coz I am rather big...

True, but they seriously affect visibility.

Many people complain about restricted visibility because of the A pillars, never mind fluffy toys...:-)
