taking son to college when hit a pothole,this broke a wheel trim,lost the back one. the steering wheel has moved round and there is a shudder ,when i took it to have tracking done they tracked it but said that the crossmember has been damaged and needs replacing is this likely

Would have thought you could complain to the local highways authority or council. If they don't pay up then maybe sue via small claims court?
Suggest you take a photo of the pothole asap - preferably showing the date on image / photo.
If this hole is as bad as it sounds and a biker hits it - could have tragic results. At least report it.
The condition of the roads in some parts of this country are a disgrace.

Put a ruler by the hole-preferably striped every inch or cm.,otherwise the photo won't tell them anything-other than it's a hole.

and it may well have a channel dedicated to such reports, just as Herts Highways does. Reports from Jo Public are not ignored and, in the Herts case, are almost always acted upon promptly.
