Is a second hand car dealer required by law to have a price on the vehicle he is offering for sale on his pitch, i.e. a car window/roof 'sticker' price?
|
No - why do you ask?

There are one or two areas where it is required by law to show a public list of prices and weights/measures, pubs and bakeries for example, but I can't see why a SH car dealer has to display them.

When the price depends on the dealers mood and the fit of your suit, then there is no way to indicate a price.

Can't help wondering what effect the fit of your suit has. Do you get the best deal if you look properly tailored or if your suit looks like something bought off the peg in Omsk in 1937? Can't let vanity stand in the way of a bargain inspired perhaps by the salesman's tender-hearted pity...

If a purveyor of used quality cars here in Devon is to be believed then it is indeed law. When pulled by Trading Standards over some cars not displaying said bumpf for whatever reason, he simply replied, "who said they were for sale." One TS employee looking like a whippet methinks.

We have a regulation here in Western Australia that says that car dealers have to display details and price of the cars for sale on a form displayed in the car window. It is useless. They just put down a very high price. If you are stupid then they are happy to take that price. Otherwise the actual price is achieved by haggling.

Perhaps the 'dealer' is operating from an place which does not have the relevent planning permission, for vehicle sales.
They may well be for sale, but not actually being displayed, or offered as such, within the confines of law.
Trying to avoid breaking the rules, by bending them a little!!

I've long understood that service stations were supposed to display the price of fuel prominently but I know of a couple where you have to read the price off the individual pumps.
Also - why do Bose audio adverts in magazines never mention price - are they afraid that potential customers would be frightened off if they knew the truth?

Either that or embarassment. Prompted by your post, i just looked up how much they were and fell off my chair!

I think Bose operate on the premise that if you have to ask the price you're not their type of customer.
They have spent many years and marketing dollars creating their image , spending as much on marketing/PR/advertising as a percentage of turnover as Macdonalds.

If you believe the claims for the sound then you're the sort of person who'll believe the price...

don't know about legalities but a local dealer who never showed prices, shall we say had a certain reputation!
I've always been told it's the biggest con in the book, dealer just makes prices up as he goes along... Nothing worse than make me a offer guv,

Why? - most of us know that the price on the screen has little bearing on the total transaction amount - px, finance, warranty, audio upgrade etc, so why bother with a price on the screen. It's the second most expensive item in many people's lives, so do some research, work out your budget, compare prices/specs, and get to the dealer who has the vehicle you like, and pay what it's worth to you.
I'd seen a Focus that would suit Mrs LY, so I watched it. It was overpriced, but local and at a Ford dealer. Ten weeks later, in the second week of August I went in and asked for a test drive for her. She liked it. It was at £7k at the start. By the time we'd finished I paid £5k, inc RFL, a free service, and a year's warranty. He needed to move it, and cash (well, debit card) suited him just fine.

Are you sure it's a dealer? Could be a car park.

Yes its a dealer and he has a franchise as well.
Most of the used stock have no prices, only 'For Sale' signs on them
