i have a 1.8 lx mondeo on an 02 plate, when the car is cold the steering makes a clunky sound when turning it lock to lock but is quieter when the car warms up, i can also feel a dull knock on the steering all the time and this seems to be worse when i'm turning a corner thats on a camber(if that makes sense to you). can anyone help with this matter?
i also have a rumbling noise coming from the passenger side rear wheel area, on the service records it says the sub frame bushes were changed 2000 miles ago and i cant feel anything when i try to shake the wheel, again any help would be appreciated.
thanks.

a up mate if you contact your main dealer and express your concerns there might be a recall or a common fault on your vehicle plus you get a gaurantee with the work carried out where as a normal garage may not have experience with this vehicle or your problem the noise on the rear may be a wheel bearing> can you drive thru the noise??? or a rear anti roll bar link >>>> ref steering is your fluid level o.k do you have the correct oil in the system???? is the pump o.k????

Steering - there is an adjustment to the column to do with the colapsible sliding mechanism, 1/2 hour job for a dealer.
Rumble - all I can think of is a worn tyre, many modern cars suffer an audible rumble if a rear tyre is low or has chamfered tread blocks. I have noticed it on my Mondeo, it has also been reported here on a couple of Vectras and a BMW 330d.

There's a Ford TSB on the steering knock, IIRC.
Rumbling could be wheel bearing - feel it after a run - does it get warmer than other side? to rule out tyres you could rotate them and see if it changes.

The clonky steering is a fairly common problem with a simple fix that involves adjusting and greasing the steering column. I had mine done under warranty.

thanks for the help with the steering, i will take it to the dealer and make some inquiries.
concerning the noise on the back wheel, i sat in the back and let the wife drive down the road and it seems to be a lose sounding noise rather than a grinding one. i will ask the dealer to look at that as well, again many thanks chaps.
