Xantia 1.9TD Lower hub ball joints - Keith J
How easy are these to replace? I have a clonk from the nearside when I go over a bump. Closer inspection reveals play in this joint, even when rocked by hand under load (To clarify, it's the one on the bottom of the great big casting that fixes to the suspension leg and holds the brake caliper.)I assume that I'll need a special spanner to undo this (looks like it needs one of those C shaped spanners). I'm new to Citroen's, this is my first one so any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Keith

"How easy are these to replace? "

Sadly, they're not. They're v tight (250 lbf ft), put in with thread lock, now rusted in, and need a special lugged tool to tighten them up at least (you're unlikely to get it out with the special tool - a hammer and chiesel is the usual weapon of choice). I've not personally changed one, but the general consensus is that it is far easier to take the hub right off so you can get it in a vice and attack the joint with vigour with it well held. Getting the hub off is no different to a 'normal' car but you will need to depressurise the suspension. Suggest you get yourself a Haynes that will tell you most of what you need to know. The hub nut is 35mm, and you need a good deep socket and long bar to shift it.... You need a T55 to undo the brake caliper bolts.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Thanks for the reply. I've done the job, but not to 250 ft/lb, so I'll see if my friendly garage can tighten it up for a few quid. Lots of swearing getting the old joint off, and even more swearing trying to break the balljoint from the lower suspension arm. The most difficult that I've ever encountered. I usually get a Haynes manual the moment I get a new car, but not this time as yet. I have read that there can be some difficulty getting the right manual for some models. I've been with Fords up to this point.

Sorry, it's 250 Nm / 185 lb ft (that's what comes from quoting from memory). Nonetheless it's v tight!

I've got Haynes number 3082, it covers petrol and diesel from K to S. Mine's a T petrol but there seem to be only "cosmetic" differences.
If you've only just got the car and are unsure of its history, may I recommend changing the hydraulic fluid? It does suspension brakes and steering so is worth doing. Don't forget it's LHM not the "normal" brake fluid.

Thanks for that. I will change the LHM fluid, as I have the ideal opportunity because one of the metal pipes from the rear of the accumulator sphere to the hydraulic pump, sprung a leak last night. it had been rubbing against the sump and a pin prick hole appeared squirting fluid across the engine compartment. Just the sort of thing I need.
