I have a bit of a dilema. I need a second vehicle and am toying with the idea of a smallish van. I would use it for basic transport and also to shift small amounts of rubble / odds and ends from time to time. It would need to be no higher than about 1930 to fit in my garage door and a LWB wouldn't go amiss. What model do you reckon? Are there any road tax / insurance problems with a private guy having a van ? Any help would be much appreciated.

Guessing you're after something older, you'll need to look out for trade ins at van dealers, for a cheapie.
but a van is most likely worn out, when it's sold, where a car will have some life left in it, maybe, depending on your budget.
Can't you manage with a big estate car?
You'll avoid VAT & the insurance problems - the cover you'll need will be dependent on the use you'll put it to - so 'groups' don't really exist & harder to get quotes without lots questions.

Personally I would go along with the idea of a cheap estate car.
Unless you actually need a proper non car derived van, the cheap estate idea is probably the best route for you. You'll still be able to carry the weight that a van would carry but you may be advised to line the load area floor (with rear seats folded down/taken out) with 10mm ply. You may not be too bothered about the interior but the ply makes it a lot easier to slide stuff in and out. I used to keep a couple of sheets in the garage cut specifically to fit my estate.
As Vansboy says, knackered vans are not actually that cheap, which makes decent ones more expensive. Decent estate cars are comparitively cheap, because a lot of tradesmen won't use them. It's all about image and perceived security.
