Hi, I have never been to Manchester (honestly) but on the evening of May the 26th I am going to see David Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame.

Question is, where is the safest place to park my car close to the venue, and where is the best place to eat. We expect to get there mid day on the Friday and probably leave about 11.

Regards Mal

Arena?

Where are you headed for afterwards, it will affect my suggestions.

Looks like the Bridgewater hall, near GMEX. There are a couple of good car parks near there (NCP). A quick getaway can be achieved from the NYNEX car park near Victoria, but it's a ten minute walk from the Bridgewater. There's also a decent carpark at UMIST near the gatehouse on Sackville Street. Monitored and again ten minutes from Bridgewater. If you park at UMIST, I love the Eighth day cafe on Oxford road opposite the Poly Union. (Er, metrpolitan uni union).

Let us know which direction you're heading back to, it can makea big difference to the most sensible carpark to avoid the rush!

If the concert is at the Bridgewater Hall, there are three NCP car parks opposite with underground passageway to the Hall. These are the G-Mex car park and the two car parks on Great Bridgewater Street. To access all these, you need to come into Manchester from the south, up Albion Street.

you turn left in Great Bridgewater Street, then right into Watson Street for the latter two car parks and go straight ahead on Lower Mosley Street and dive down to the left opposite the Hall for the G-Mex car park.

Ask the mods to e-mail me for further details. I go to the Hall regularly.

Eating - Manchester has a huge selection of restaurants from every country although the Chinese is generally the best in the UK (Yang Sing on Princess Street).

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

btw I have yet to see a good review of his new album. Stick to Roger Waters or the old Floyd.

Parking is bang on as Espada says, I park regularly at G-Mex with no problems.

Eating Out: as mentioned China Town is Good and has a casino as well if you fancy a couple of late night drinks. Yang Sing is still probably the best for chinese although lives off its reputation now and is not as good as once was, "Pacific" on George St is pretty good, or the cheap(ish) and cheerful "PEarl City". Italian you can goto "Croma" near the town hall on Clarence St I think? Pretty good with some crazy pizza's.

We also have the Curry Mile with some very good restaurants if you don't mind a 10 minutes cab ride??

Cheers
Lee

Personally I'd steer clear of the big NCPs nearby to concert venues. Hundreds of cars all trying to get through a barrier at the same time is a recipe for a big queue. Look for a smaller car park a few minutes away, unless you're going to eat afterwards to let the queue subside.

Watch out for these guys though!

I personally avoid the car park at GMEX since the time we were stuck in there for about an hour without moving. Some problems with the barrier meant it got gridlocked. Also hate the one at the MEN Arena (NYNEX as was).

I now park at an NCP off Oxford Road (1. on the list at the link below) which has always had places for me. There's a short route to the Bridgewater Hall from there between some offices.

The extra long wait time for the escape is why I recommended the carparks I did; you can find yourself losing a lot of time in a queue for the sake of ten minutes walking.

Noticed you're there all day - try the Manchester Art Gallery on Moseley Street for a daytime snack (or the Cornerhouse adjacent to Oxford road station), or a particularly Manchester treat - the Dutch Pancake house. I've not been in there for ages but I can't think there's too many other pancake houses about!! and all three are within spitting distance of the Bridgewater hall.

I'd agree that NCP linked above is best bet (number 4 on that list - the Palace is not too far either.)
If you don't fancy chinese - Rain Bar on Gt Portland street has nice outdoor patio and is very close. My favourite is an italian called Piccolinos near town hall, (or Croma opposite does good Pizzas)

The Bridgewater Hall carpark is excellent. IIRC you get a discount for parking if you're going to a concert. Manchester's Chinatown is superb. There are several little restaurants near the Bridgewater - Italian etc.

Sorry I could not get back earlier, thanks for the good response.

I will be travelling from Tyneside to the Bridgwater Hall arriving about mid-day. It would be a good idea as suggested to steer clear of the closest carparks to avoid the rush at the end of the performance,I don't mind a healthy walk back to the car as long as it will be secure where it is.

Are there any good department store cafe's in town for a mid-day lunch.

Thanks and regards Mal.

Depending on your budget... next to each other on cathedral walk (top end of market street) are Harvey Nicks (Posh!) , Selfridges (not cheap, lots of different little deli counters in basement)and Marks and Spencer cafe is OK.
Kendalls (House of Fraser) on Deansgate has at least 2 cafes, one is Albert Roux Cafe.
(Nice place called the Olive Press on Lloyd St just off Deansgate also recommended!)
Manchester parking & eating ? - Nsar
and park in the NCP behind the Renaissance hotel on Deansgate opp Harvey Nichols. Right end of town for coming in from/getting back to M62. About 15 mins walk tops from the Bridgewater.

Or park on the outskirts and take the metro (tram) into town and back out.

Chris Muriel, (Sale, south side of Manchester and on the metro route).

As others have suggested, parking outside and train or tram in is a good bet. Manchester is an expensive place to park and it can be a pain to find a spot. On-street parking is free after 6 and I've not had any problems in the past re security so one option is to park outside then go back for the car.

Food: Depends what you like and your budget. Selfridges and M&S have decent eating but you'd be better off looking at one of the smaller places. I can recommend The Earth Cafe - whether you are vegan or not I think you'll love their food. Another option is the Marble Arch gastropub just outside the centre although take it easy on the beer if you are driving!

Hi Mal,

OK, here's your plan. Come into Manchester down the M62 and take j17 (turn left off mway) and head straight into town. Beware the speed cameras!! You'll eventually pass the Boddingtons Brewery and Strangeways Prison and come to a junction. Turn left here and then right into the NYNEX (MEN Arena) or whatever they're calling it these days car park. Not the cheapest in town but a good position to escape from and you'll avoid the worst of the one way system.

Trundle out of there via Victoria station and head towards the huge glass building (Urbis). You're now in the town centre. At the bottom of Market Street there's an M&S - this faces onto the Royal Exchange theatre which does good food if you fancy it. (the M&S building also has a Selfridges which does amazing and amazingly expensive food in the basement).

I'd go to Kendalls though and onto the 6th floor to the cafe in furnishings. Good balance between price/quality. Avoid the Roux places in there, they're expensive rubbish (imho).

Have a good day, manchester is a top city, although Newcastle takes some beating!

You can get out and head north fairly easily from the NYNEX (MEN) car park, but please be aware of the scameras!!

Thanks all for the many suggestions for my day in Manchester, which has been very helpful.
I should have no problems now and look forward to my visit and also of course seeing Dave Gilmour.

Regards and Thanks Mal.

I know what you're thinking Mal. You're thinking "Wish You Were Here Adam". But I can't. I'm Learning to Fly on that day. I had High Hopes of making it myself but it was just a question of Time and Money.

One Of These Days, I'll get Brain Damage and end up at that Great Gig in the Sky but until then, I'll just stay Comfortably Numb enjoying Pink Floyd from afar.

I think I'll Have a Cigar now and bid you, Goodnight.

Manchester has its own London Eye now (at least it did when I was last there before Christmas). It?s not as big but it?s quite impressive and you get about three revolutions on it. You?ll see it from the Royal Exchange, it shouldn?t be too hard to spot.
