A while back I tempted fate by saying on this forum that I had not had a puncture in 18 years. Well I've had two since Christmas. In both cases they have been caused by metal debris on the road. I am not driving any differently so the only explanations are:
1. I have been very unlucky.
2. The low profile tyres on my car are more susceptible to punctures.
Have other people experienced this?

Fortunately no (recipe for disaster).
However, when I got my current Bora (16in low profile tyres) just under three years ago, I spotted a nail in the offside front tyre.
So I nipped to the nearest tyre centre sharpish, where a young lad took off the tyre and placed it in a large container of water. No bubbles.
He then pulled out the nail.
To my embarrassment it turned out to be merely a nail head stuck between the tyre grooves...:-(
After we had a good laugh I was told there was no charge.

Took wifes car in for a front tyre change. They spotted nail in a rear tyre but there had been no air loss. Said i'd come back next week.
Took "nail out" at home and it was a short nail/tack and not long enough to cause a puncture at all. Still okay after 6+ months. Hope I'm not implying they did something... but having thought about it maybe they did ;-(

3. The roads aren't being cleared as well
4. People are more careless with scrap metal
5. There's one particular culprit / spot in your area where there's scrap metal on the road
I've also never had a puncture. I did have a sudden flat tyre once which was bizarrely caused by a stone catching a wheel balancing weight, pushing it off and into the tyre which caused a gap and the tyre deflated. Once it was re-inflated it was right as rain though.
|
I haven't explained that very well. The balancing weight basically acted like a mini crowbar, prying the tyre away from the wheel.
This was with high profile tyres on steel rims on a Volvo 440

>>The roads aren't being cleared as well
Put it this way, road sweepers do pretty much close on 20 mph.
Dont sweep the gutters of road as well as they should due to speed, brushes are usually as effective as feather duster and sweep up almost nothing.
Then leave a trail of screws nails metal bits in middle of road for tyres to pick up.
Not had a puncture in over 5 years untill road sweepers were assigned our road to sweep, what a waste of time and our money

I thought I had been unlucky having 3 punctures in 18 months, all with nails. After chatting to a neighbour, I found he had 2 punctures on his BMW with low profile tyres. It seems we have been suffering a vandal leaving nails under our tyres. The vandal has now been identified and arrested for another incident of motoring vandalism. Out of these 5 tyres, 2 of mine were repaired, but 3 had to be scrapped. The BMW tyres are a low profile sport type that cannot be repaired according to my neighbour.
It has been over 20 years since I received a puncture whilst driving, then it was a quarter inch bolt that blew out the tyre at the end of a section of roadworks on the M1. So metal debris on the road still causes punctures.
