I am about to change my car and have picked out the Seat Altea as a good all rounder, based on the 2.0 diesel sport version, possibly with the DSG auto box which performed really well on the test drive (the manual box was also a pleasure - what a great gearchange). But one point that concerns me is the doors, and the styling line in the metal, which seems likley to pick up car park dents and/or scratches very easily. Does anyone know if these cars suffer from this? Also, what do you think of the car? I'm likely to buy new and keep for 3 to 4 years, which to me is about 60K miles.

I recently bought the 1.9 TDI and have been very impressed. Previously I had a Civic which also had no door protectors but as I had no problems with dents I did not hesitate with buying the Altea. I think most manufacturers are doing away with the protective strips as they do tent to ruin the look of their cars. I have been very impressed with the Altea with it's smart looks and tardis like interior. The interior quality is far better than the Civic and also far more comfortable, however the sport models do have harder suspension but not by much. I think there are few cars that offer such good value and great looks. I hope this helps.

Modern water based paints tend to scratch quite easily, whatever make you buy.

Make sure you're happy with the lack of rear visibility. Personally that would stop me buying one (ditto the new Honda Civic and Renault Megane) but I knoe not everyone feels as strongly as I do on this one.
My view may be coloured by 30 years of reversing into my garage and so far successfully avoiding hitting SWMBO's car, Any married man will be able to imagine the consequences of that.
(Why not reverse out? Up a slope on to the road - no thanks.)

Suspend a tennis ball from the garage roof so that you just touch it with the rear screen when you are correctly parked.

Great idea if her car is behind mine, but unfortunately it's beside it. Not a problem provided that 'three-quarter' visibility is good.

Perhaps it's just as well then that you are last in...:-)
