New Vectra CDTi 150-Pants or not? - scarlett pimpernel
I have been offered a new job.Good salary, good prospects but instead of the free choice of car I have at present, its a Vecta or a Vectra.
At the moment I have an excellent Accord Tourer CDTi and wonder if I`m going to notice much difference.........

The longer you have it, the more you'll notice.

Test drive one, it will feel a bit less gutsy at low revs though goes well and is a smooth diesel engine.

Contrary to the point above I reckon you will get used to it.

The Fiat 1.9 JTD is supposed to be a good engine from what I've read from owners on :

www.forum.vectra-c.com/

Much better in terms or refinement, performance and economy than the older 2.0 and 2.2 diesels that Vauxhall used to fit to the Vectra.

If there's a Mrs SP, she'll certainly notice ;-)

Gets my vote. I test drove one a day before collecting my 2.2 petrol Vectra, but it was too late to change the arrangements already in place with the garage I was buying it from, otherwise I would have had the CDTi instead.

Yes you will notice - I have an Accord and certainly would.

Are you suggesting that the car is the major factor in taking/not taking the job?

I've got one. Or rather, I've got the pre-facelift version.

It's a great car, a bit of turbo lag but otherwise a very good diesel engine - much better than the old 2.0/2.2 DTIs.

Try to get one in SRI spec, the extra body kit and firmer suspension really makes the car, IMHO.

Only trouble I can see is that the official 0-60 increased from 8.8 to 9.5. The emmissions and economy have improved slightly, so I guess the gear ratios are longer. Great for BIK tax, not so good if you enjoy performance though.

I love the car anyway. No badge status, but I really don't care either way about that! :)

So to answer your question, no it's not pants - unless the badge on the bonnet and the opinion of Mr Clarkson means anything to you.

:D

Why not take a test drive at a dealer and see what you think? It's all down to personal preference after all. To me an Accord (or any Honda) would be pants but I'm biased and I know it.

Not pants at all - the Vectra is a decent car and the 150 bhp diesel is a good engine. I wouldn't choose it over an Accord or even a Mondeo but if I wanted the job badly enough I wouldn't care as long as I had a decent comfortable car. Definitely test drive one though - I found it a bit soft, wallowy, nose heavy handling, not much passenger room in the back but a fantastic long legged cruiser on the motorway.

I test drove the new improved Vectra SRi (post Oct 05) when I was looking for a replacement for my ageing BMW 528 (E39).

The Vectra handled very well, had a smooth ride, and I loved the 150hp diesel engine.
Only reason I didn't buy one was that I hated the bulky dashboard and front console design.

If you're going to have a company car, then it's better to have one that you don't really like as you don't fret then if a stone hits it etc, and you haven't got to waste time keeping is shiny. It's just a tool for the job.
Employers that are too stupid to realise the downside of forcing their staff to drive a particular car deserve everything they get.
