Primera DCi estate - rubbish mpg or not? - Jase
Hello Again,

I have recently got myself a 2003 Primera 2.2DCi estate to use a a family car and a commuter. It was cheap and available etc..

Its now done 75k miles and just had a new turbo (as some of you know!)

Anyway my commute is about 35miles, mainly DC and motorway with a mile or so of stop and start at each end. I travel at <=80MPH in 6th gear most of the way and there are always 3 or 4 blokes in the car.

Trip computer, which I reset when I filled it up is saying almost exactly 40mpg which I reckon is simply poor. Not measured it manually yet but I will when I fill it up. Was hoping to see 45mpg on this run tbh.

Question is, is this the going rate for this engine? If its abnormally low, what sort of things are common faults with ths engine to cause it? Car has had the recall work done apparently..

Thanks everyone

One of the best ways to gauge whether your car's econonomy is right or not, is to find out the book extra-urban mpg from the manufacturers figures, then find a quiet motorway, set your car up at about 65mph (with just one occupant) and reset the trip meter.

You'll never get exactly the same, but it you maintain a steady 65mph, you should get somewhere near what the book says for extra-urban.

40mpg does sound very low, unless you're chomping the gas pedal. Possibly the turbo isn't run-in? I dunno... sounds unlikely, but you never know.....

The other possibility of course, is that the trip computer is lying!

- 40mpg at 80mph sounds OK to me for a larg-ish, heavy-ish estate car with 4 passengers. I'd suggest that 45mpg would be achievable if you slowed to around 70mph and/or lost a passenger?

Thanks everyone. Sounds like 40mpg is the going rate then. Bit poor but car was cheap and is big and comfy and the stereo is nice, so the commute is a doddle.

The Primera DCi isn't that great on fuel,40 sounds reasonable for the model, although nothing like what BMW or Audi/VW get out of similar lumps.

My petrol Primera saloon gives about 32mpg (ish) on a 22 mile commute, 1 mile local heavy traffic, 8 miles stop start motorway, 11 miles clear motorway and 2 miles clear A road !

I don't know how some people achieve the figures they claim. I can get 55-60 in my Mondeo estate TDCi if I sit at 60mph on a motorway - but how realistic is that!? Usually achieve about 42-44 on an average tankful.

It's not as much weight of a car I think as strange mapping - I have the same engine in my current Almera, with the same 6 speed gear box and average 40-42mpg. If you look at the real time economy graph on info screen you'll notice the optimal economy peak point is a pace between 35 and 50 mph. As soon as you go over or under those speeds regardless of geabox ratio or torque on the speedo economy goes way low but engine is capable of providing very nice punch and speed ups up until 120 mph. Previously I had Almera with 112bhp version of the same engine with 5 speed gearbox and different ECU and it was comfortably doing 48-52mpg on commute to London even if the engine was noticeably "running out of breath" when pushed to go quicker.

I've got a Saab 9-3 2.2 TiD, and get similar mpg figures. I used to get 38-41mpg doing 75-80mph on motorway commute plus a little bit of town driving, with just me in the car.
I've now fitted a Tuning Box and get 5 to 6 more mpg on my normal commute. On a steady A-roads run at 55-60mph I can now get 53 to 55mpg, as long as my right foot doesnt get too heavy!

Also, with 3 or 4 blokes in your car, that could easily be a quarter to a third of a tonne of extra weight its got to lug along, which is not an insignificant amount of weight.

Mine seems to have been a few mpg down over the last couple of months, which I have been blaming on cold starts and winter diesel at the pumps. Whether or not this is the case I dont know, I'm waiting till the weather warms up again to see if the mpg picks up.

I was going to suggest - maybe a good idea to get the ecu remapped by the likes of superchips. Not only do you get more power / torque - normally becomes a sweeter drive, often improving mpg too.
