Had an attempted break-in to my 2001 Punto and I now have to enter and exit via the hatchback/boot if I want to lock the car. The central locking still works if all the doors are closed and I 'press' the switch on the passnger door from the inside, but I can't lock either door with the key (both locks are damaged). I can get-by getting in and out via the boot (to apply the cental locking) but I'll be fed-up of it soon.
I know it's debatable whether or not it's worth locking this car in the first place, but -
Can these locks be repaired or is it as straight replacement job????
I'll do it on the cheap if poss. as have just stumped up for a new cylinder head gasjet.
Cheers and a big big thanks to those who responded previously concerning Punto-issues. I've never before been able to get technical info like this.

It will be a straight replacement job, its not worth the time or effort to try to repair the door locks. If you only get hold of two lock for the doors you will end up with a different key for those doors than the boot/ignition, unless you can get the locks made up by a Fiat dealer to match the original key.

I have had this 4 times on the Punto I bought for daughter. Without going into details, the locks are easy to damage to gain access. I found that usually the lock would still work though, with bit of judicious and careful work with a scredriver and the key
The second time it occurred they stole radio, purse, phone, CDs (words were spoken about leaving stuff in the thing) and the whole was repaired (New door skin, respray, ne radion, new locks all round etc)
After the third time I told her not to lock the thing.
She ignored me, and the lowlife then went for the remaining undamaged lock.
I have them both working with care, but the mechanisms are both lopsided in the doors. Some repairs are needed to the door and locks, and I was thinking of just fitting a cover over them (intended to provide security, but would cover damaged area without painting etc)
Of course, this means the thing is unsaleable

you dont say how the locks are damaged?
what usually happens is either they screw the metal around the locks and this "tips the door lock and upsets the levers,
or they put a screwdriver into the keyhole and turn the lot,if they have done this then unless you are competant at rebuilding locks then i would suggest a couple of new locks from fiat, they can be different to the chipped key ignition setup and therefore in relative terms quite cheap. The other solution is some s/h locks from a scrapyard.
Mk 1 punto locks are dead easy to change as all that holds them is a large c clip if the mk2 is the same then the job should be dead simple for yourself. If the doorskin is twisted then you can buy a door skin restorer that is basically 2 large heavy washers (any parts wholesaler can get you one of these or frosts or possibly machine mart they should cost approx £15 all in) with a bolt that you tighten this "flattens" the skin back to shape.
When all rebuilt but paintwork still slightly damaged round the lock go to a car discount shop and buy the door lock scratch protecters stick them round the locks and job finished
good luck.

Try a locksmoth, we had this on the Mk1 Punto, he told us to get one from a scrapyard, and then he did something to it to make it match the existing key, I assumed he disassembled it and changed the order of the pins to match the key, it cost about £30+the lock

I can remember my father putting a gate-type hasp and padlock on the outside of the door of one of his transits rather than getting replacement locks from the dealer. Might not be allowed now in case it hurts a pedestrian (not sure it was really legal back then either!).

Fiat dealers can supply a remote locking upgrade kit for some models - it is around £60+VAT I think, and then you could leave the locks broken, and just use the remote control to lock/unlock the car.

Dunno if its the same as the 02 version. I had it broken into at a suppsedly secure airport parking...long story. As it was insurance job Fiat dealer said they had to replace All locks and ignition barrel cos of keycode chip + 2 keys. IIRC they charged insurance just over 200 quid
As a matter of interest the would be theives must have had a large screwdriver/chisel going by the damage on the locks but still could'nt gain entry so the smashed the drivers window to get in ...and find nothing.
