Car written off in car park - JH
One of today's letters to HJ asks for advice on a replacement car after the current car was written off in a car park. Now, just back up a minute. Never mind the advice - how did it get written off? How on earth do you write off a car in a car park? You tease HJ! We want to know the facts.

In the absence of facts let's speculate!

Too easy. And you'd have to have been pushing it or you'd not be thinking what to replace it with.

Sideswiped by a supermarket delivery artic? I did think it was a bit odd! Perhaps it was a £500 car and beyond economic repair!

It was an old Citroen XM turbodiesel that had been overfilled with oil, was running on piston blow-by lube after being turned off and revved faster and faster until it blew itself up.

Having read the letter, the car was a Scénic of indeterminate age. If it were a 1998 car, it could easily be worth a little over £2k.

A side swipe with panel damage around a pillar requiring a one-sided respray, plus storage and car hire costs, could easily amount to that at an expensive-ish bodyshop or main dealer.

(But I'm speculating of course.)

Someone I know had a newish Shogun written off as a criminal's uninsured new Lotus was parked next to it and caught fire due to an electrical fault (wire snapped and the smoke leaked out?)
Could not get anything from the third party, and they were already 'known' to the Police, probably for drugs related matters.

Hit by a shopping trolly cart

Or a man colleting them loosing control and the carts being caught is a gust of wind on an incline that causing them to slam into the side of an older vehicle's bodywork ... the whole side of the car.

Perhaps not so funny, but SWMBO's car now sports several dents after hit by several carts loose in the carpark on a very windy day, with no cart collector in sight.

Supermaket pointed to disclaimer signs on the light posts.

My mate's daughter had her Corolla written off in a car park (along with several others) by a (very) old boy who hadn't quite got the hang of the automatic transmission in his new car. After the first one, panic set in.

What a scary image, nicely painted.

Friend came back to her old but servicable BMW in a car park to find it damaged (which resulted in it being written off). Attached was note asking owner to contact local constabulary. Assuming that they had witnesses as to who had done it, it turned out that a panda car (do they still call them that?) had hit it whilst chasing local low-life...
