Sideswiped by a supermarket delivery artic? I did think it was a bit odd! Perhaps it was a £500 car and beyond economic repair!

It was an old Citroen XM turbodiesel that had been overfilled with oil, was running on piston blow-by lube after being turned off and revved faster and faster until it blew itself up.

Having read the letter, the car was a Scénic of indeterminate age. If it were a 1998 car, it could easily be worth a little over £2k.
A side swipe with panel damage around a pillar requiring a one-sided respray, plus storage and car hire costs, could easily amount to that at an expensive-ish bodyshop or main dealer.
(But I'm speculating of course.)

Someone I know had a newish Shogun written off as a criminal's uninsured new Lotus was parked next to it and caught fire due to an electrical fault (wire snapped and the smoke leaked out?)
Could not get anything from the third party, and they were already 'known' to the Police, probably for drugs related matters.
