Do car device chargers have a fuse? - smokie
Those things that plug in car cigar lighters I mean. I have had two "go" in a few weeks - both were pretty new, one was the TomTom and the other for a Motorola phone. They seem to be sealed units. I'm just wondering whether my car is pumping out too many of something (volts?) for them.

Smokie,

On some of these adapters you can unscrew the endcap (the +ve bit of the plug) and behind it you *might* sometimes find a fuse - that is of course if it unscrews and isn't a sealed unit.

I just took one apart for the PCB to charge a 'tracker' phone! (previous thread)
This did not have a nose that unscrewed as I expected, there was in fact a small piece showing through a slot on the side that you push with a screwdriver until it allows it to split. Inside there was a 20mm glass fuse.

I have had problems with these popping fuses. You need to ensure the socket is clean and giving good contact, otherwise resistance goes up,current draw increases and blows the fuse. Also found the cheaper plugs have a spring behind the fuse which can turn into a heating coil and melts the plastic casing.I chopped these off and replaced them with quality plugs from Maplins.Tweaking the side springs out helps,if you have to clean the socket don't forget to pull the car fuse to it first. It is a pity that we have arrived at these sockets by default, rather than having something with a better design.

Alas yes we are now using a device that was designed to set fire to things to now powering very expensive things that we dont really want to set fire to!
