Last night son took dark blue micra (54 reg) out and parked in quiet residential cul-de-sac. This morning we saw it had been keyed from below the petrol filler to half way along the drivers door - it shows up as white not metal, so not too deep. What is the best way to treat this and how much is it likely to cost? How does this affect the paint warranty - ie do I have to take it to Nissan for repair? I do not want to go down the insurance route if at all possible.

so difficult to answer with it being so new,i personally touch cars in with an artists brush but in your case unless you intend keeping it for a fair few years it really needs a bodyshop.

This really is an insidious, nasty, small-minded offence.
In principle any paint scratch which you can 'catch' your fingernail in will require paint to be applied (i.e. won't polish out) and you already indicated that the topcoat paint has been removed back to primer. As OM states you can touch in with a fine brush and polish back - but it won't be invisible and the only alternative is a re-spray.

I wonder whether 'Chips Away' can help with this sort of thing? Worth a phone call. Google should give you a link to them.

Apart from has it been reported to police, yes take it to nissan for repair.if not done properly ie by another garage and anything goes wrong.it rusts before its time-you have no comeback on firm that did the job.

If nissan do it and its recorded as it should be,you then can take it back and get the repair free(thats my understanding anyway).

when my dads car and mine were both done ( along with about 8 others on the road!!!) mine had come up white a lot of it actually managed to polish out is suprising really just how much maybe try this before having to pay for a respray.

Temporarily not a student, where did the time go???

For a perfect job it will be around £300 per panel as they will respray the lot. I got a quote from one of the dent-removel franchises (think it was chipsaway) - they were prepared to do it, but only in their specialised body-shop, and at a price which I guess was no cheaper than other independent repairers.

My sympathies, son had his old Clio "keyed" - yes it was old, yes it was worth "asterisk" all, but it was his pride and joy at the time. Why do people do such hateful and pointless things? Sorry, not a helpful response, but it makes me angry that others would do this - hope you sort it for a reasonable price.

I'm wondering how long it'll be before any youngsters watching Heartbeat last night (highly unlikely, but you never know) copy what the Mod did to the Bentley outside the pub and start keying cars for the sheer hell of it because they saw it on tv.
Car keyed - Adam {P}
The youth of today Dave probably know how to key a car without even moving!

God I sound old.
Car keyed - Dynamic Dave
I'm sure they do Adam, but they don't need the TV encouraging them to go do it some more.

I have a feeling you might be in a bad mood so I won't reply with my usual hillarious recollection of zany antics but I will say it'd be amazing if a kid watched Heartbeat at all let alone be influenced by it ;-)

I would as mentioned try and polish this out using a very fine cutting paste eg T cut.

>>Why do people do such hateful and pointless things? <<

Because it is ingrained as part of our culture, thats why.

"If I cannot have something nice and enjoy it, then why should you?"

It is all part of our build up, smash down approach to anybody who has any success in anything or dares to own something nicer than a neighbour.

It is why this country has been going to the dogs for years. Apologists for bad behaviour are everywhere and that is why it goes on and on and on and on.................

I think I need to lie down!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you might need to lie down Dave E but,...... i fully agree with your post

There was 'a yout'on the radio yesterday, the first to have an ASBO lifted, when asked why he he had started offending in the first he said'there were, like, all these students and they had stuff and we didn't'....
When I worked at a community centre we talked to local joy riders about their activities, they said it did not really matter when they stole a car and burnt it out because the owners would get another off the insurance,so they were doing them a favour really.
And finally, could have been worse, one night someone went down my street and smashed every windscreen of all the cars parked on the road, and the side windows of the minibus I had outside.

Ah yes, Thatcher's children. 'If you haven't got it then take it or break it'-simple eh. It worked for the City folk and then everyone else got in on the act lol. reap what you sow......................

Our Seat Ibiza was keyed, if its not too deep Halfords sell some polish products which can mask the scratch. this worked at least to the casual look. The trouble is even a complete respray can spoil a new car, its never quite the same. the only answer may be to bring back transportation for young offenders. Ive lived in Australia its very depressing and could work.

Many thanks for all the suggestions and opinions. Have managed to polish out all but a small mark on the door - leaving about an six inch scratch there - but the back panel is too badly marked, so on to the dealership and in the meantime visiting bodyshops so we have a better idea of what we should settle for. The dealership have been very good to date so fingers crossed. Will report progress when it happens!

Thanks for that up-date. It's always interesting to know the outcome of a reported problem. I just wish that more people would do it.
